Subject: Stand Alone Items

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 22 June 2002 at 4:23 AM · edited Fri, 09 August 2024 at 12:24 AM

I have changed my Free Stuff items at least once, and gone through and changed some back. This whole issue of Stand Alone Item is pretty confusing to my simple mind. In my estimation, everything I've done would require something else to work. For example: 1.) MAT Pose file for the DAZ Olympian Outfits. I've clearly stated in the thumbnail that you need to buy the outfit. 2.) Poses and faces for Poser characters. Well in one sense you need the character that the pose is intended for. But beyond that you don't need anything else. Neither item stands strictly on its own? But you can't really consider them addons?! Maybe someone here can figure this out? I have better things to do than keep changing my descriptions. Thanks. Ron

If some one has to buy DAZ Olympian Outfits to use your Mat Pose, it is an add on. Morph targets are add ons (because you need to own Vicky to use the morph target for heir head, i.e.) A Morph for Posette is a stand alone, because Posette is anyhow included in Poser. Stand alone items are objects or figures you can use without to buy or to load or to download something else before you use it. :-)Guitta

I forgot: Textures are add ons if you need to have the object (figure, dress, book...) to use the textures. Textures are stand alone if they are "just textures" like brick wall textures or any other you can apply to a cube, a ground or... Guitta

Actually, that doesn't really hold very well. Your definition: "Stand alone items are objects or figures you can use without to buy or to load or to download something else before you use it." This flies in the face of: "A Morph for Posette is a stand alone, because Posette is anyhow included in Poser." You need to load Posette to use her morph. You need Vicky to load her morph. The only difference is that Posette comes with Poser while you buy Vicky. *** I think this whole addon/standalone thing came up with situations like this: An addon could be a piece of clothing that requires the previous purchase of the Michael or Vicky clothing packs. Many times the contributor didn't list that fact on the freebie thumbnail, or in some description. I don't think someone would be confused if a freebie is labelled as textures for an existing product or freebie. But then again I've always labelled my freebies properly. The issue of standalone or addon was mute in my case. So I'm still open for another interpretation on this issue.

OK, my english is not good anough:-(. I agree with what you say in better english about Posette:-) Now it is just easier for us all to find exactly the items we want:-) Guitta

And ron, many artists who uploaded free stuff did NOT say (like you) that the item "x" is needed to use th offered stuff. Now it becomes clear. :-)

Ron, standalone means you don't have to buy anything except the relevant program to use it. Textures for posette or the standard P4 clothes are stand alone because everything you need to use the item is included when you buy Poser 4. Most props are standalone - the geometry is included in the .pp2 file for most. Lights and cameras for Poser would be standalones. MAT poses, anything for Victoria or Michael - these are add-ons because they require a purchase in addition to Poser itself. It's just an attempt to stop people downloading freestuff items they can't possibly use.

OK, it's settled for me. I'll go back and make sure my Freebie Items are marked properly. Thanks. You guys made some really good changes here.
