Good Morning All . . . 8^) I know this topic has been discussed several times now, but I am still having a difficult time in understanding just how to apply a bitmap to a terrain object, & get it to scale properly. I created a test image, ( 512 by 512 ), then in Vue 4.1 I created a terrain, & in the terrain editor I made the terrain, ( 512 by 512 ). When I rendered it in Vue 4.1, it rendered just fine. But now, I want to apply the same, ( test image ), to the terrain as a bitmap for coloring. So I choose a material, select the bitmap for the colors & here is where I'm having my problems, " Trying to get the bitmap to scale onto the terrain object properly. " If someone wouldn't mind explaining how to achieve this task, again, I would sure appreciate it greatly. Thanks in advance for any help & you have a good one . . . Mark. ;^)

Change your sizing by the x=1.000 and y=1.000 and that should take care of it, in the material editor where you apply your map. Sharen

Hi Sharon . . . 8^) Thanks so much for your reply. After reading your post, I went back into Vue 4.1 & played with the "Material Settings" until I got something that is fairly close, but it took so long with experiments to get it to fit properly. In Bryce, you just apply the bitmap to a terrain, & there really isn't any of the problems that there seem to be in Vue 4. If you notice in the screen grab = I had to set the Material Scale = 2.000, & the Picture Offset = 10500, to get the bitmap to come close to fitting. I wouldn't think that would be a normal procedure for each time you want to apply a bitmap to a terrain object??? If this is the way it has to be in Vue 4.1, it's really way too much work, just to apply a bitmap texture to a terrain object? Anyway, thanks again & maybe someone else will post an easier way of accomplishing this, you have a good one . . . Mark. ;^)

PS: ( Here's a screen grab of the Material settings I had to use to get the bitmap image to fit properly. )

I would think there is a better way, but I have only applied bitmaps for our models, ususally I have to apply it like where the x=1.000 and then the y=-1.000, and it usually fits, but I wouldn't think it would work with what you were doing, maybe if you messed with the mapping it would be easier, you know Guitta really would be able to help here. Wait, I am sure Guitta will come up with a simple way. Sharen PS: looks good though

Anyway, this is a problem with Vue Kruzr... Mightypete figured out the math for how to do this, so that it becomes easier, but it's still a lot of unnecessary work... In Bryce, this is a breeze... Anyway, check out the link and I think it will help...

I was thinking today how nice it would be to have a terrain mapping mode. Just think of the possibilities!

Personally, I would like to export a terrain (.bmp) file, and then re-use it as a color-function map in the material editor on the same terrain. That would be excellent!

Charles, Maybe not possible just a thought, but exporting the terrain as 3ds morph to obj. and put UV mapper to work? regards Maria

Maria,
I don't think UV Mapper would work.

What I was thinking is this: When you export a greyscale image of a terrain, you save a detailed altitude map. This map, used as a function, would be an excellent choice for mapping colors in the Material Editor. This is much easier than using mixed materials and the 'Influence of environment' altitude controls.

Of course, one could color the terrain map in Photoshop and use it as a texture map.

So for creating color output, an exported terrain map can be used in the function editor or as a mapped picture.

Thus the need for a Terrain Mapping Mode which would make this process a snap.
