Kozaburo has a good transmapping hair tutorial on his site.

You might find a tablet for around $100.00 U.S. (thats the price I got quoted at Comp USA a month or so back.)

Perhaps someone on the the texturing forum or the photoshop forum might be of more help on how to use the trackball. (I use a regular mouse but I think a tablet is probably the best solution despite the high cost.) - TJ
