Subject: Another WIP... Now the trash bin has evolved to an entire scene

So... Would something like this sell at all?

There will be more trash (and the trash on the pic is actually a bit hard to see, I know that) Also there will most likely be a grafitti texture on the wall G

But are scenes like this wanted at all? Or do people prefer to do their own?

And what more trash would you want?

a little more texture work, make the doors look banged up. vary the sidewalk tiles a little. and of course more of your signiture trash and yeah it'll sell, at the right price.:)

One lurker's opinion for what it is worth: I personally love gritty urban landscapes. That is probably a signal that it would not sell because what I like (and buy) seems to be the exception rather than the rule to everyone else's tastes. So would it sell to me? Maybe (depending on the price). Would it sell to someone else? I don't know. I love the little messy details though. Looks like my neighborhood. I've been downloading the separate little free props of newspapers and cans and tissues. If all your little props could be used separately from the big one, that would be a plus to me (the more mileage I can get out of a purchase, the more likely I am to invest in it). I have to say, though, that trashcan would get stolen in my neighborhood. Our city has gone to concrete imbedded trashcans with plastic liners because of theft (and now the transients steal the plastic liners....I know, I've seen them do it). Do I prefer to do my own? Since I can't model to save my life the answer would be "no" for me. I am dependent on the talent of other people, and am likely to remain so (but I do admire greatly those of you who can create these things). I might add a fire hydrant and a mailbox and a more thief resistant trashcan, and perhaps a better lock on that door, if I could model and knew how to do such things. I'd love to see the final result.

This is why I lurk instead of post. I know this is a back door and so there wouldn't be a fire hydrant or a mailbox. Good grief...what a dummy I am. Apologies for exposing my stupidity so clearly. For some reason I started imagining the front of the streets that I walk on which isn't what you had in mind at all. I'll slink back in the shadows now. :( But I'd still check out the results for a future purchase. ;)

A stoop, no it's a back door, but it's close to a front brownstone stoop which I think might sell. I'd buy it. And, yes, there would or could be garbage cans in the front for garbage day, big battered ones in dark chrome, because you don't expect the Waste management technicians to actually get Off the Truck! And some bags would be ripped, because even though you are supposed to put everything in the cans nobody does. How do I think this would sell? Well, I just bought a fire escape for my punks to hang out on. There's a whole lot of punk clothes and paraphenalia around but you can't very well show them off in a gazebo. I would buy a good front stoop too, with a curb that I could park Duddly's car at and lousy kids to kick the tires and sit on the hood. It'd be a great scene. The most perfect would be a NYC brownstone with a half flight down and one flight up. so you've go this little cave under the stairs where the junkies go. And a window that goes up so some old woman can be yelling at the kids. I should scan some pictures of my flat on the upper West Side. It's not too tough architechtually. But what do I know? Emily

Argh...you two lost me there.... stoop? curb? someone please get me a dictionary L Uhm I don't know if it's a front or a back door. I guess I had a front door in mind but if the door looks more like a back door, then... I guess it's a back door G Anyway, a fire hydrant MIGHT be a very good idea, and I've also considered a "no parking" (or something else) sign. But then..if it's a back door.... Emily, I'd love a few pictures, I've never been to NYC (or America for that matter) and have only a faint imagination of what it actually looks like. The idea of stairs going DOWN as well as up is good but I'll need some pictures to get it look right. Windows.. I hope they'll come, remember it's a WIP ;o) Oh and of course everything will be textured, not just the wall :o) And dialyn, ALL the props are separate props that can be used anywhere. (well the heap of cigarette butts are ONE prop, but apart from those...)

I think the textures are what would make or break something like this, gritty, dirty, dents and scuffs, stains of unknown origin, etc. Definitely need a more robust trashcan. More trash definitely. In a seedy urban setting, you might find anything, a junk car, broken television, drug paraphenalia, rats, lots of empty bottles, trash in cardboard boxes etc. And of course, a sleeping wino, excuse me ethanol challenged person.

Please remember that I (and others) have already made a lot of those things you mentioned :o) they're on this pic
Well I haven't made a not a junk car or a broken tv...Would a broken TV actually lay around in the streets???

And of course textures are most important to give the right seedy feeling :o)

Sure I see broken TVs all the time. Some other things you might see are.

Dirty old mattress
Shopping cart full of trash
Broken bike with parts missing
Ugly plastic milk boxes
Telephone pole with signs pasted all over it
Phone booth with a broken phone and broken glass
Old chair or couch with the cushions gone
Wood pallets
Bundles of newspapers and cardboard
Old car tires
Bags of aluminum cans
Broken old refrigerator
A big pile of dirt
Oil barrels
Bus stop bench with advertizing
Fast food bags, wrappers, and cups
Manhole cover
Electrical panels

I guess I spend way to much time in places like this. :)

Your trash is definitely the trashiest (a complement :-) I guess the building facade is the biggest thing. A search for things like tenement and slum might bring up some more ideas. As for the TV, yes you find 'em. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine found two computers in the trash. Granted they were old 486's but they worked and still had Windows and other software on the drives. In our disposable society, folks throw away just about anything!

I can make my own walls and windows, but could use some unclean textures for the walls. Plaster breaking away from bricks, randomly broken wood.... Hmmm..stoop does not equal verandah at all in the U.S. A stoop is a small landing with steps, may or may not have a covering overhead (often doesn't). A verandah is more like a large porch or a balcony, usually roofed and often partly enclosed, extending along the outside of a building. From my understanding, a stoop is more likely applied to an apartment building; a verandah more likely applied to a house. (I could very well be wrong...this is just my interpretation.) As for what would show up in the street; anything that should be in a trash can. This morning I found a plastic bag of dog poop hung decoratously on my fence. Usually they don't bother with the plastic bag.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 1:28 PM

Stoop = porch? (not really - I'm not sure we have a name for 'em, just front steps or something). The below pavement level area is called an "area", and would have been the access to the service section of the house (kitchen &c) way back when.

queri ( ) posted Tue, 27 August 2002 at 2:09 PM

Porch is closest. But about the size of a stair landing. If you sit on one no one can go up or down the stairs-- which is kind of the point. One of the fun things to find on the street is slightly broken furniture, although some people put their split and legless couch out on the sidewalk for a comfortable place to sit in the evening. Without a verandah you do what you can. I'm working on the pictures-- gimme couple of days, can't find the drivers for the scanner. I took a lot of snaps of my old neighborhood to write a mystery story around-- which has gone very upscale, I could not afford to live there now. The trees have actually grown to provide shade and ambience. When I lived there-- in the 70's they were constantly stunted by dogpee. I was sure they didnt have a chance. I have one of a small up and down stairs arrangement that would be easy to do, I think. Emily
