THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Changing grouped object origin...

Anyone know how to keep things from going haywire when changing the origin of a group object? All the objects within the group don't seem to like this much. I'm using Bryce 4, dunno if the version matters but it might. Just curious, that's all.

I have experienced this myself and currently don't know the answer. When grouping the landing gear components of my mitsubishi zero to make the gear retract I find that they do not exactly move the same relative to each other. I think the answer though is going to be in assigning all my parts to a group and then making one cylinder and making it the parent of the landing gear group so that when I move the cylinder the gear moves with it. I am hoping this will work for me.

I think that creating a null object and parenting the group to it is the only solution. Place the null object at the point where you would normally set the origin handle. When you move the null object all the objects that are linked to it move with it like it is the origin handle.

I noticed that if you have a neutral object grouped to a boolean it can create problems. but I'm still using 3.1 so it may be different.

You're right about the boolean problems Bikermouse, but it's a different problem than this one. This 'origin handle in groups problem' is just a bug in the program. If you type the new origin codinates in the attributes of the group all the objects in the group react different. If you just slide the origin handle manually (with the mouse) the problem is solved as long as you don't change anything to the group or re-open the scene. As soon as you move the group with the changed origin handle the problem emerges again. I hope Corel fixes it in Bryce 6/PRO. The boolean problem still has some logic to it, but I agree it can be very irritating..

I to have had this problem (B4.1) and my solution was to move the origin handle by hand so to sspeak and then re- adjust using the attributes box - its as though it needs a kick start
