seems not so easy, fidelt around with the matlab for some time( the image is the best i got till now) in other 3d apps if you add a reflecting mat to something it reflects also the light,in p5 i didnt got it till now. Had to add a spotlight behind the mirror otherwise you get only dark shadows.Maybe it is cause other programs have something like omnilights??? but now p5 can handle transmaps in the reflections

Spanki ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:27 PM

"but now p5 can handle transmaps in the reflections" Woohoo! ~does a happy dance~ Yes, normally, you only have lights set up to render from one side of an image... if your mirror is reflecting the backside of your character/scene, then you need to have lit it from that direction as well - Poser doesn't really have an ambient light setting.

it looks funny... her left arm is lit on this side of the mirror, but in the mirror it's dark... i still think p5 is faking it. somehow rendering the image as a distant figure in the mirror, not really reflecting the rays. or something...

aleks ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:32 PM

thomas, have installed the patch? or what do you mean by "now p5 can handle..."?

aleks ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:33 PM

"have YOU installed"... :P

thgeisel ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:37 PM

yes, i installed the patch

Spanki ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:47 PM

Aleks, "her left arm is lit on this side of the mirror, but in the mirror it's dark..." That's because the lighting is different from the back side. I'm sure if you rotated the camera around to where the mirror is, you'd get the same image as the mirror is showing (once you account for the various mirror material settings).

thgeisel: Did you also notice that the raytraced relections are now rendering faster with the patch? There was a lot of work done in that area. Aleks: It's not faking it.

aleks ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:51 PM

spanki, i think i expressed myself somewhat unprecise. it should read "her shoulder and the top of her left hand"... :)

Nebula ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:53 PM

Thgeisel, Hey! That's really slick. Mirror's are something I want to work on but I'm still trying to get the clothing to fit my character (Milena). (I assume those are Billy-T's lingerie sets? He does some great work doesn't he??) :) Is this a true reflection or did you duplicate her and place her on the other side of the mirror in reverse? It sure looks like a true reflection. When you say you put a light beind the mirror, could you elaborate on that a little more? Thanks! And keep up the good work! Nebula

saxon ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 1:59 PM

I think we're missing the quintessential meaning of this particular statement juxtaposed as it is with that emminently sublime work. I mean, of course.... nice arse...!`

Spanki ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 2:12 PM

Aleks, but.. you don't see those pieces of her in the reflection... you see the underside of her hand, which is lit differently ;). Nebula, you just need to light the character from both/all directions. If she is lit only from the front, the mirror shows the backside, which is dark (unless you add lights to light her from the backside).

aleks Firefly in P5 does in fact do raytracing, not portal reflections. Glad to hear it has been sped up and the transmap problem solved. Another reason that you have to add additional lighting in P5 is that light isn't reflected in P5. Bill

Lawndart ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 2:36 PM

Thanks for the great input Bill Another little tidbit is that with a raytracer. The more lights you put into the scene the longer it will take to render. The renderer will need to bounce the rays for every light in the scene when you do the render. Chhers, Joe

Lawndart ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 2:37 PM

Thanks to you too Spanki... Saxon: All I can say is humma humma humma.... LOL

thgeisel ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 2:42 PM

saxon : you are right :-)) No, as said before , i only wanted to show how far i got, and how i did. And maybe some else got a better idea. yes, with the patch it seems to be faster , reflections and refractions look much better.

oops ps great cough reflection thgeisel ;)

timoteo1 ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 4:00 PM

Thanks for posting this ... it created an educational thread on P5. Although I've had a hard time looking at the reflection as my eyes keep wandering to roughly the center of the image, for some reason.

wayneout ( ) posted Fri, 04 October 2002 at 5:04 PM

What did you use to make the mirror? I tried the one side plane without a lot of luck. But maybe it was me. Bill

[the question you should never answer] Yay! transparencies in reflections do indeed seem to be fixed!

There are numerous settings that will work, but here's one to try. Note that the slight blueish diffuse color was just to add a little blue tinge to the reflection... that color is basically multiplied into th relfection (use black if you want pure reflection, white will wash it out).

Here's the floor material that I used (which also has some reflection in it).

I don't know, to me the real reflections look slightly fake, the fake ones look slightly real! I bet I can do 'em (fake ones in Poser 4) faster, anyway. ;-)

thip ( ) posted Sat, 05 October 2002 at 2:20 AM

Slightly OT - will you please, just once in a while, post a pic of an ugly old man shaving in front of the mirror. I'm having a very hard time explaining to my wife that I'm pursuing technical inquiries when I'm looking at all those scantily clad ladies checking themselves out in the mirror LOL Just bookmarking, folks ;o)

By the way, do I have cheap glass in my mirror, or what ?

it looks like you hooked up a refraction node to your mirror (?)
