I'm making a saloon, wild west style. Anybody interested? Please remember it's still a WIP, no textures or anything, this is just a very quick render to show the basics. Any suggestions for improvement?

This is very impressive, I think if I was doing it I might add a few windows on the side and make the beams on the bottom of the deck a bit longer, other than that, she is going to be a beauty. Sharen

Looks just right at this stage. The doors, windows and proportions are appropriate. Remember that glass was expensive and hard to ship, so window area would tend toward the minimum. (Especially in a saloon where breakage was very likely.) When you get to the texture stage, consider making the roof with sheets of rusty iron, and the walls from vertical wood slats. (Board-and-batten style)

Looking good. I notice though that the left upstairs window is wrong in relationship to the sloping roof behind. By the way, loved your halloween contest entry:-) Jack

Sharen~ Are the beams supposed to go out beyond the sidewalk? I've only got a rather miserable picture to look at G so I might have missed some details. I've thought about some windows at the side and I'll probably add a few. Ockham~ :) Glad it looks right. I know you know what you're talking about when it comes to proportions :o) The textures are about what I had thought about. Lemur01~ It's due to the angle that the window/roof looks odd, they do not interseect (but ok.. they almost do) I'm glad you liked my contest entry :o)

Gorgeous. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's done.

queri ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 11:01 AM

It's very neat. Maybe you should know that there are already about 3 saloons/western hotels out there-- on Sharon's site and Lyne's and there are one or 2 in the MP here. Plus a free one, I think as well, not high res, but. Emily

We could really use some gypsy stuff, considering the costumes at Daz. Like tents or bazaars, arcades, that kind of thing. Emily

I didn't notice there were other saloons :o/ However I do continue with this, right now adding some interior stuff. How d'ya like this? Oh and gypsy stuff... I don't know how that should look :o(

PWFW has a saloon interior, I know -- with a lot of props, etc.

Dizzie ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 2:15 PM

Great Saloon! My only suggestion would be to move the front roof higher up the building so that the height under it is taller.

Looking good so far. Can't see anything to comment on except maybe something on top of the squared off edges of the top of the frontage... a white rail maybe to loose the raw edges of the wood. Jack

I love this! Getting it for free would be just great, but getting it would be the most important part! You do great work. I'm making a Western series and this is just the ticket. Thanks way in advance. Larry F

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 8:14 PM

You might want to add some railings so they can hitch their hosses. :) Melanie

SAMS3D ( ) posted Fri, 18 October 2002 at 4:14 AM

Hey this is coming along really nicely, the railings might be a good idea, but didn't they hitch there horse's to a post that was on the ground in front of the buildings? Anyway don't think it matters much, I think this is really quite good, and I love your sign. Sharen :-)

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Fri, 18 October 2002 at 4:16 AM

Yup, railings are coming up :o) They're most definately needed for the horses. And yes there's going to be "something" on the front, on those edges, they doesn't look right at the moment.

I don't know what they did in real life, but in the movies they always seemed to just wrap a`rope or something a couple times around the railing, and I always wondered what kept the horse from just walking away. They never seemed to tie it so the critter couldn't get loose. Melanie

*L* Melanie, I've had the same thoughts myself about the horses. So here it is, with railings to tie the horses to. I think this is about as good as it gets, now I'll add some interior (the bar, first of all *G*)
