There are some programs that produce actual 3d models (LSystems -- importable into Bryce), and 3d-like stuff (Xenodream -- internally rendered to a 2d image.
In addition, a 2d fractal image can be used to create a G2H (greyscale to height) map which in Bryce can be used to make a terrain, which can then be textured with the original fractal if you want those colors.
I'll track down some tutes and links if no-one else has them ready to hand.

You can also import pgm files from Xenodream into Bryce. Check out smithgiant for some examples. http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=smithgiant Jonathan Allen has a tutorial on disrupted fractals in Bryce. Maybe that will help you.
