For a drop shadow effect to be viewed, the selection has to be on a layer that has transparent pixels. Meaning, if you've selected an element from the picture and it's on the same layer as the background, you won't see it. Make a new layer with your selection a then add the drop shadow effect. If this layer is above the background, it will show up.
If nobody else posts a picture-tut i'll do it when i get back later tonight. otherwise if you want to post the image and indicate what you wanted to have the drop shadow on i'll see what i can do to help.

Step one: Open the image
Step two: Create a layer the has only the element you want to have the shadow dropped on. Make sure the background "white" area is NOT included with the selection!
Step three: Select the Drop Shadow effect from the Layer Effects icon at the bottom of the Layer Palette. Adjust to fit needs.

Hi could someone please help me I'm trying to drop a shadow from a selection but getting nowhere fast. Maybe point me in the right direction for some good tutorials, anything would be a help.
