Subject: Carrara & Poser

Never rendered in anything but Poser. Tired of the lack of punch to my scenes and dying to create some of my own models I want to know if there are tutorials about that will firstly tell me if Carrara is compatible with my older 8600 PowerMac and also how to import Poser characters with tex and transmaps into Carrara. I have Version one and downloaded the v2 update from the manufacturer site but got the impression it was only for G3 and faster Macs!? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

shante, Off of eovia's site: Power Macintosh G3 - 266Mhz or better I've run it on an original iMac (G3 - 233mhz) without any problems, but it was pretty pokey. I don't know if they actually use any specific G3 instructions, but I know as a 3rd party developer I compile for G3s and better because of the published minimum specs. Hi shante, I have it running on a 9600 with a G4 upgrade card and it is running fine. I also ran it on a 7500 with a G3/400 but it ran a little slower Hope it helps

I ran Ray Dream and C1 on an old Performa 6400 and it was a nightmare compared to running it on a G3. Personally I would say you need a G4, 800 MHz and 1 GB RAM to use C2 fully. Search this forum on how to import Poser characters with textures/transmaps, because there are a dozen articles on it. Some PC users refer to Grouper (just one of a long list of 3D apps with no Mac version), but you don't really need Grouper if you are careful.

I am running Carrara V2.1 on an 8600 with a G3/400 upgrade card. It's fine. The cards are very reasonable now. You can get a Sonnet G4 /800 for $400. It really depends if you are expecting to keep your old warhorse for a few more years...those iMacs are less than a grand and give you a whole new computer, hard drive space, video card etc.
