I remember reading a thread about software calle cacheram which apparently increases virtual memory or something, does anyone know where I can get it and what it does exactly. Cheers MARVLIN

If you're using Windows 9x/ME/NT/2K/XP, you can increase your virtual memory yourself. No need for a third party product. Just be aware that Poser will crash n' burn if you set your initial or max virtual memory above 2GB.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

I had got my virtual memory set to min=10 & max=2gig, however poser was crashing occasionally for no apparent reason, the computer would just restart, so maybe as it's borderline that's whats causing it. I have just reduced my max setting to 1.8 gig so we'll see how we go. Thanks Mate MARVLIN

So... any good tutorials out there for increasing the maximum virtual memory in WinXP?

Cacheman is not for virtual memory; it's for physical memory. If youre running a windows 98 or ME computer the most you can utilize for one program is 128 Meg of your Ram. Casheman allows you to use all available physical memory (Ram) for whatever programs your running. Another words, you may have 256 Meg of ram but you wont be able on a win 98 or ME machine use more then 128 Meg for Poser. It's better to use physical ram then virtual memory. Physical ram is faster and not using virtual ram so much will save the life of your hard drive.

Actually, I believe that the final release of 98 will work with 512MB before it starts getting flakey. The limit was 128MB in the first release of the OS. Past that Windows can allocate so much space to it's virtual cache it eats into address the system needs for other things. One other benefit of Cacheman is that it will reclaim memory which ill behaved applications sometimes fail to free when they are closed.

I actually have an xp pro P4 1.8 with 512meg and for my virtual paging I set up a hard disk all by itself (well, cdrw is on same eide line but no software installed/running on harddrive and not partitioned with another drive) and set my virtual memory to that harddrive manually setting my max to the 6g (can tell is old disk from machine bought in mid 90s!)

I have never had the crashing problems with memory that others have complained about (yes I AM knocking on wood and praying P5 didnt hear me!) by setting up my memory parameters this way (since win98se been doing this).

If you do control panel and get classic view do system - in xp view do performance then system (for both views do the following) then advanced then performance then advanced then change button for virtual memory and select drive then set manually putting in min and max as available. At least that is way I remember doing it and of course do the reboot.

If you have a prob - email me at jerri@cruzanware.com or am usually on msn messenger under that email

oops just checked and my mem max is 4096 limited by xp pro sr1. I have also been able to do remote control from laptop 98se (128m ram) and run P5 w/o any lockups since p5 beta 5 if that helps but seems most problems are with nvideo stuff and i use ati 2k. Dont flame me - just an observation..... hmm, just found 2 g to store stuff on - cool. thanks for your post and having me check :-)
