THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Grr... Texturing poser chars in bryce is a pain in the ass..

Roshigoth ( ) posted Wed, 12 April 2000 at 4:12 PM · edited Wed, 14 August 2024 at 8:31 PM

I know the general way to do it.. I'm just feeling like griping right now, mostly because I've got a .mat file I wanna apply to the pants of a poser guy, but it takes forever to ctrl-click and find each little piece that belongs to it. There wouldn't happen to be a "select by material" option in Bryce 4 that I overlooked, would there? How about a way to select a single figure from the poser .obj (like the pants)? Oh well.. Perhaps a wish list for Bryce5.. Rosh

Something my father (Harrison2) taught me, when you bring a object with lots of pieces label them all (pants, legs, arm, finger etc..) So when you cntrl-click you can select them ALOT easier, The castle I've been working on the past few days has atleast 150-200 objects in it (Prolly more i dunno) and thats before i add the details, labeling everything has let me go back and change textures about 10 times now alot easier then i could before my father shared that little secret with me. Hope that helps -F3nix

Thanks.. I actually do that already.. Still, the pants consist of way too many parts.. and I'm also doing the shirt.. things just add up, and it's a pain.. i was wondering if there was an easier way.. I'm gonna play with it and see what i can figure out.. probably my best bet would be to try and do something on the Poser end, but we'll see. Thanks for the help, Rosh

Well one thing that I have found that is really helpful is to tab through them. It sometimes takes some work to find the starting point but if you hit the shift key and the tab key in bryce it will add the next part to your selection. Keep on doing that and you will get the whole thing but you cant back up a step if you go to the next model. I think that it will work on the PC too. You might try starting at the hip since that is the body center. Summary since I rambled: select object, tab + shift, continue until done If you dont hit the shift key it will just cycle through the pieces without grouping them all

Hey, that's cool. Didn't know that one. Thanks! Rosh

Yeah it is .. Cant remember who mentioned something about it

I didn't know that one ether.. very useful, thanks Ghost. -F3nix

yes and also in addition to grouping. try creating family's groups can be selected independantly of familys and vice versa. Familys can overlap and extend beyond the boundries of groups. also ctrl/shift click will let you have specific control of selections .. and group selections Hawkfyr

I simplified things by leaving the default options as-is when exporting from poser... I think the important one was "export object groups within groups" or something like that.. it should be off, and then it just exports what you need for different materials.. worked exactly how I wanted it, except that my 4-part sword was turned into 1 part.. that I can fix by just importing it separately and placing it appropriately... Thanks for the help, guys. Rosh

Yep, already knew that Hawkfyr.. I mentioned in my orig post I was getting tired of repeated ctrl-clicking.. the shift just lets me add/subtract to/from the selection. As for families, well, I'd have to get them selected first. Thanks, though. =) Rosh

Ah My Bad, Yeah I meant once they were selected that familys are a good way to keep things organized. I do wish Poser and Bryce could shake hands better . Maybe if Corel gets Poser too the can combine the development teams to make them more compatable (Wishfull thinking) Hawkfyr

I doubt it.. but don't I wish... I could go on about how Bryce and Poser both could be improved but all that's already been discussed time and time again.. hehe.. oh well. Rosh

Is Metacreations Planning to come up with a fix for this issue?

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2000 at 1:03 PM

well Not likely I just read the news that curious Labs Got Poser , and With Bryce going to Corel .it doesnt look promising but who knows , Like Rosh said we could go on and on but it's just speculation at this point. Hawkfyr

Incidently, if you are using any of the Poser patches all the plain texture maps sould come in with the figure, unless it crashes, which it will if it is too complicated. Transmaps don't come in, of course, it is a pain. But if you use something like Allie's hair a lot you might want to save a material for it, saves some work. What I'd really like to see would be a Raytracer in Poser 5, and a way to bring Bryce scenes into it, instead of the other way around.

Roshigoth ( ) posted Fri, 14 April 2000 at 3:34 PM

I have maps coming in.. I know that stuff. My problem arose from the fact that I wanted to change the material once it was in Bryce, because I had a Bryce preset I wanted to apply to it.. I got it all figured out now, so I'm happy. =) Rosh
