Subject: Changing Default Folders in Libraries..

JFStan ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 11:22 AM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 4:22 PM

This may be a simple matter, but is there a way to change the default folder that is displayed when opening the library categories? For example, whenever I open "Figures" the folder "People" is displayed first (although it isn't at the top of the list). And, when I open "Props" the "Prop Types" folder pops up. Some files I have installed have changed the default folder in some of my libraries, so I assume that it's possible to do this manually (perhaps in an "INI" file or other configuration file). Can anyone help? Thanks, -=JFStan=-

GOOD question! I'd also be interested in changing the default lights!

The only way I've found is to rename your directories, so that the library directory you want as your default, bears the default directory name.... crude, but it works.

Just remember that if you change your library for say ... Vickies clothes all new stuff will go to the old one. Marque

Sure, it's easy. Just rename your Library folders. But what you have to understand first is how Poser reads folder names. Any folder name beginning with a number will come at the top of the list, followed by folders with upper case letters, then lower case. So, if your folders are... 01 posettes 11 vicki 21 clothes People animals ...they will appear in exactly that order. Note the People will be before animals. If you named them Animals and people, Animals would come first. My folders use the number system followed by a name (01 posettes). That way you can go from 01 to 99 in Characters, Poses, Props, whatever and they'll appear as you number them. This applies to any Library category in Poser 4. Remember to do this with Poser closed, then open it to see the results. mac PS I HATED seeing People all the time too!

maclean, thank you for that idea. i am always at a loss on how to organize my files.

heyas; in p4 you can't. in p5, you can hack the... i forget what file, but the info is on the p5 customization tutorial at my site. (3dmenagerie.com) what i did was take all the humans out of people and throw them in a directory named 'humans.' when the people directory is empty, the library drawer opens a heck of a lot faster, and then you can navigate around to wherever you want to go. you could do the same with the prop types; empty that out and throw them in a 'props' directory. i think most of the other libraries go in alphabetical order.... my 'custom' hair library usually is always open. i think.

Thanks for the help everyone.. It seems strange that some installed files (either from executables or ZIPs) that create their own folders affect the default sometimes but not always. No matter how many folders are created in "Figures", "People" is the default folder. But "Hair Types" under "Hair" was the first to fall (I don't even remember which one comes up now). You'd think this info was stored in some secret place somewhere. Perhaps... :) -=JFStan=-

Actually, if you just rename the default folder, Poser will open the first folder in the list.

NO! do NOT remove or change the 'people' directory under figures. i tried that, it was a disaster. poser would NOT run. (well, it would run, but forget trying to load a figure). now that might work with the props or other, but "people" has to stay.

Is that Poser 5? I changed it under both Poser 4 and the ProPack with no problems. But I don't load any figures on startup. The only thing I noticed is that -- and I forgot which one -- the folder that holds that default guy must be there to run the Walk Designer.

NO! do NOT remove or change the 'people' directory under figures' Bloodsong, My 'People' Folder is now called '91 people' It contains blank zeroed copies of the standard P4 fem and P4 guy. And they load fine. Mind you, I get strange things in Poser no one else gets. Like the fact that as soon as I open Poser it unchecks my default window setting of 'Show contents while dragging'. Complete with 4.03 patch, memory management patch and everything else CL has to offer, and it STILL does it! Oh well.... maybe Poser 5 won't do it. But when will I ever get around to installing it? mac

heyas; you changed yours and it didn't flake out on you??? hm. mine did. :/ your poser must like you better than mine likes me. naw, poser 4. poser 5 doesn't care what anything is called or where anything is. as i pointed out, above, you can edit the whatever ini file thing to tell p5 what you want your default directories to be.
