Description

Approaching the curiously named "Martini Ledge" Lagazuoi The Dolomites ^/\^ In 1915 Italy declared war on the Austro-Hungarian army. The Austrians abandoned the town of Cortina and took to the mountains to defend the passes and stop Italian access. After months of unsuccessful bombardments from the Italians, both armies tunnelled into the mountains to hide troops and guns. They soon discovered that the best way to destroy enemy positions was by blowing them up. The whole profile of the Lagazuoi mountain was dramatically altered by massive explosions thats left an enormous summit crater and vast scree fans at the mountain base. The troop path goes up through tunnels and protected paths and there are signs of warfare everywhere, from trenches and gun enplacements to bits of barbed wire and old boots, and an awful lot of bones..... I didn't get the big Dolomite landscape views I was looking forward too, but the troop path walk was enthralling and a brilliant plan B.

Interesting story to go with your picture. Very impressive mountain, and definitely not a place I would wander around if there was enemies further up... Very nice!

Probably called Martini Ledge because you would need a massive cocktail after walking up that precarious path! Very interesting story and image.
