Description
We made our way up through the labyrinth of tunnels carved out during the first world war. Every so often a side tunnel branched off to a gun emplacement or an observation window, where enemy troops could be shot at or bombed. Sometimes they branched off, simply to check their position on their course to the top of the Lagazoui Mountain.
As our tunnel neared the presummit it spiralled upward and we popped out on a shattered landscape, a vast explosion crater made more sinister with swirling cloud.
It was difficult to imagine how a war could be fought on such trecherous terrain, even in summer some of the tunnels were iced up, conditions must have been horrendous.

Each window we past looked out on blank white nothingness until this one where the cloud cleared for a few brief moments.
