Description

Skylands Manor in northern NJ is an oasis of calm, elegant, stately serenity about 40 miles from a place that could not be more different -- New York City. It is the New Jersey Botanical Garden (NJBG) at Skylands, located in Ringwood, NJ. The image captured the golden sunlight of a September afternoon with the contrasting and somewhat turbulent suggestion of changing weather. Equipment was a Nikon Coolpix 4300; automatic exposure; 2272x1704 pixels; high image quality; tripod. Site conditions were both shade and direct sunlight; late afternoon 6:10pm. Image detail settings: METERING=MATRIX; MODE=P; SHUTTER=1/94sec; APERTURE=F8.0; FOCAL_LENGTH=f9.0mm(X1.0); IMG_ADJUST=AUTO; SENSITIVITY=AUTO; WHITEBAL=AUTO; SHARPNESS=AUTO; QUALITY=2272x1704 FINE; FOCUS_AREA=CENTER The postwork was done in Photoshop 7: limited to crop, resize, optimize for web. Thank you very much for viewing. I appreciate each and every comment that you offer -- progress depends on criticism and advice as well as praise.

I love the bright sunlight falling on the structures with the dark clouds in the background; such a gorgeous contrast! Great capture!

This is my favorite kind of sunlight. And a truly beautiful image. Such intense colors! I only wish that the sunlight was falling on the doorway, although I can't say exactly why. :)

Mayliah, That is a very interesting observation. When I took the picture, I really didn't have any choices that I could make. In fact, I saw 2 major contrasting elements: the darkening, turbulent sky vs. the intense, warm, late afternoon sunlight falling on the wall of the Skylands Manor House. You have not only reminded me to see the darkly shadowed doorway, but also to consider this as a story -- perhaps about a journey (doorways imply coming and going) with a sense of forboding. Perhaps that's why you hoped for sunlight there.
