Description

My favourite photographic activity used to be doing B&W prints. I sometimes get the urge to covert my Poser renders and thought I would see how Camielle would turn out :) Method: Simply desaturating colour images and particularly this one won't generally give the best results. (be they renders or photographs) It's often preferable to use one of the individual RGB channels as the basis for a monochrome image. In this case the red channel was the only one that had any chance :) I think Photoshop will let you access the individual channels directly, but since I use Paintshop Pro, I had to use the option to split them out. In order to add more interest to the 'B&W' image I did some extra post processing. In this case I layered the red channel on top of the basic colour render using the 'screen' option. I added some soft focus to the red channel layer and about 120% of unsharp mask to the base render layer. I then reduced the transparency of the base render layer until there was just enough colour bleeding through to produce a 'warm' image. I finshed off with a small amount of sharpening and contrast adjustment to the final image and added some monochromatic gaussian noise. The products used for the initial render are listed with my original 'Camielle' image. Thanks for taking the time to view and for any thoughts you might leave - Mike

As a PSP user myself; thanks for the hints on how you did this. You're right - the results are much better than with a simple desaturation. The only suggestion I'd make is a little more postwork round the noistrils to reduce the V3 nose effect; otherwise it's excellent.

Olaf, I think 99% of the world's best images are monochromatic .... but then I'm biased and my formative years were the 50's and early 60's :)

Wow, i like this version even better than the original. Excellent postwork. I use Niks coloreffects for BW conversion, because it simulates any colorfilter used in reallife BW photographie with an simple slider... ~Uwe
