Description

Egmont mentioned that he is really into clouds at the moment, so this photo goes out to him. Let me also mention Saurav, who's dramatic sky/landscape images are an inspiration. But all of you clouds lovers out there, feel free to appreciate it. ;] I've seen some incredible cloud shots on RO lately and want to add a couple that I feel are quite dramatic. We've been having some amazing skies here in Florida lately, and I have tried to capture them when I can. These photos were taken while traveling through the wilds of central Florida. The country opens up and you can see for miles and miles. They were taken late afternoon, a common time for thunderstorms to form during the summers in Florida. I was in the area known as Lightning Alley on Interstate 4 between Orlando and St. Petersburg. There is more lightning activity on Lightning Alley than any other area in the USA. Florida is lightning capital of the United States, experiencing lightning strikes at least 100 days per year. In comparison, California has four or five thunderstorm days per year. But I digress. What caught my attention was the interesting optical illusion found near the horizon. There was a spot where the more sedate clouds were meeting the wall of thunderclouds that played with my sense of perception. At the bottom a trail of clouds appear in front of the lighter background clouds, but towards the top, the lighter clouds appeared to be in front of them. Where they met, there was a subtle push-pull. It was a tough choice whether to post a larger version of the bottom image or just the top image. In the end, the drama of the top photo and the subtle interest of the bottom persuaded me to present both together. I apologize if the combination is a little unwieldy.

No apology needed! This is sooooo cool! I could spend all day looking at clouds. Your top image is full of faces! Sadly, here in California, we just are not having the thunderstorms we usually do. It's been so hot that the moisture just doesn't even have a chance (106 degrees yesterday, just south of me)!!

This is incredible! Nature at one of her best moments. There is always magic about a cloud and the many different forms and shapes it takes, all according the movements of a wind or a breeze. I also recall that as a child and like many other children, I would lay back on the lawn and just look at the clouds and imagine the many different shapes take on mythical creatures and beings, filling hours with empty idleness. Even today, I cannot just look at a cloud without thinking what secrete messages it may hold for some one looking at the same cloud. Thank you Kort for two amazingly beautiful photographs of clouds. You have made my day.

Clouds are always interesting whether they are friendly or angry. I'm always looking for faces or image of something alive in the clouds. Most of the time, my imagination will find something. In the top image, I see a lady looking up. In the bottom, I see two faces. One looking upward and the second looking towards you half hidden behind a cloud. Excellent capture. Aloha

both are magnificent captures, Kort!!!!! in the bottom one i can almost see the rain falling...at least that's what it looks like to me. it's such an usual cloud formation and the lighting is spectacular! the first one looks as though it has a mouth at the bottom and is moving through space ready to inhale anything in its path! looks like it has a life of its own!!!! both are absolutely fantastic! i'm a cloud freak for sure! can stare at them all day! I love these and can't wait to see more!!! :)
