Description
"Morgaine! Morgaine!"
The sound of someone calling her name brought the girl out of her slumber. She sat up with a gasp and staggered to her feet. She squinted and saw a familiar figure splashing through the water, coming towards her, wearing a very worried expression.
"Morgaine! Thank goodness you're safe! What happened?"
"I-I was..." The girl's words were muffled as the man she was to marry reached her side and engulfed her in his arms.
"You seemed upset after dinner and you took off into the night. I tried to follow you, but I lost sight of you in the darkness. And I thought I heard a splash..."
Morgaine sighed again. "I'm allright, Cormic. I just...went to walk along the cliffs, became careless and slipped. I fell into the sea...so, I spent the night on those old ruins off shore and then swam back to this cove at first light."
It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't exactly the truth either. She and the boy from the sea had come back to the cove together and he'd apologized to her, in his strange way.
"Sorry ta leave you here without a blanket, lass," he'd said with a grin. "Our kind don't have much use for the things, you know. But the sun will be up soon, and your people will be sure ta find you here. So, farewell, lass..." And then he'd disappeared beneath the water and she felt as if a part of her heart had gone with him.
"Are you hurt? Do you need to see a doctor?"
The sound of her fiancee's voice returned her to the present. "I'm fine, I promise." The last thing the girl felt she needed were more people fussing over her...and she had yet to see her mother, who was doubtless beside herself with worry by now.
"Morgaine." His eyes had yet to leave her face. "Morgaine, is there something the matter? Something that you want to talk to me about?"
She shook her head. "No, there's nothing. Can we go back home now? I'm feeling rather tired, and I know Mother must be worried..."
"Right, of course. The boat is back there..." He took her by the hand and helped her into the craft. "Are you sure you don't have wedding jitters, love?" A smile lightened a usually serious countenance.
"No, it's not that!" She smiled back and did her best to look happy, but a part of her mind kept its own counsel. Why, it asked, does his smile never reach his eyes?
