Description

This is a collaborative piece. The sky and terrain were rendered in Terragen 2 by JavaJones. The P-51 was rendered in Lightwave by me. I can't take credit for modeling the plane, it's a stock model that came on the LW 6.0 disk. You've probably seen it used by other artists elsewhere in the galleries (the tail number is the give away). I just repainted it to suit my needs, renamed it, and threw in a pilot. When I saw JavaJones' superb Terragen 2 image "Hello Or Goodbye", I thought it would look great with an airplane flying through. So I humbly begged for permission to use this fantastic image. Since I already had the P-51 model laying around, I figured I might as well put it to good use. There are still a few details to be considered, any other critique would be appreciated. This is going to be a great poster to hang on my wall! I'll post the final in the Terragen gallery. Thanks again to JavaJones! Pin...

Excellent image, the sky is fantastic and well worth re-using (I have not seen the original) and the plane looks great, the lighting on the plane looks very good.

Whay not ask JJ if he can render the reverse view for ya, that way you could use it to out relections on to the plane aswell, give it that extra zing.

The cockpit canopy doesn't look enough like glass/perspex. Maybe add the tiniest bit of vapor trail from the left wingtip? So far the image is fantastic, though! BTW The title is from a poem (my favorite) by an RAF pilot who flew Hurricanes. I look forward to the final pic.

In August or September 1941, Pilot Officer John G. Magee Jr. composed "High Flight" and sent a copy to his parents. Several months later, on December 11, 1941 his SPITFIRE collided with another plane over England and Magee, only 19 years of age, crashed to his death. Pin...

On first view, a great looking picture. Fantastic bkg. If you're looking for suggestions, mine would be all about lighting. What you have looks beautiful but the plane is still losing focus to the sun. You might argue that the lighting you have is realistic and that's what one gets. My suggestion would be to push reality into giving you more hot spots like you have on the fuselage in front of the canopy. Glints like you have on the right wing would really punch-up the silhouette if it were also on the right wing and tail. As VRG said, something to define the edges better on the canopy as well. The soft "bounce" you've got on the belly is very nice. Being a P-51 fan I would just want to see the plane defined in the foreground more, I think it's high enough to justify the light. : )
