Description
The Hanlin angel is in the northwest corner of Calvary Cemetary. She's interesting in one regard-- she's the same pose and overall piece as the Young angel I uploaded a couple days ago. Compare the two when you get the chance. Hanlin is slightly smaller and in much better shape. The stone she's carved from shows very little erosion. But she seems strangely primitive or at least less graceful. The sculptor seems to have obsessed over making everything perfectly realistic and didn't know when to relax and let the viewer's imagination fill in the details. Still, one nice thing about her-- we can assume that the missing hand of the Young angel was probably holding a rose as the Hanlin angel does.
I'll go back and copy the dates down on these two.
