I am a cowboy at heart, I have to admit it. I love spending time with my horse, and the more people I get to know, the more I like spending time with my horse.
Unless of course it's spending time creating images like this one.
BIOMy day job is as an art director for an advertising agency, and with some good fortune, I've actually met 3dExplorer on here. Shouts out!
More or less I have been working as an artist for more than 20 years, professionally. In my private life, I enjoy making music, performing live, and working with my horses (I now have two, Outlaw's Rolling Thunder - a Belgian Draft Tennessee Walker cross) and Jimmy Two Socks - a Tennessee Walker. I am training Thunder for the trails, and we're having a particularly good time discovering a lot about each other and bonding a great deal.
Living in central Illinois is somewhat limiting in my reach artistically, but thankfully I have come across forums like this and others which allow me to expand the reach of my work, and at the same time still enjoy the relative anonymity of living in the midwestern United States.

LOL. Thanks. But like I said, it's got a long way to go. Figuring out the seams on this guy is gonna take a bit.

Ont thing you might want to add, that I noticed other rust textures lack, is rust-runs. These are the water flow deposits from where water leaves the rust stains, down the water flow from the actual rust. These are typically dark reddish-brown-blackish stains. These add realism to corrision and rust, big-time. They don't need to be big to indicate water-seepage and corrosion.

I agree. I went down to a buddy's basement though, and looked at pipes that had been sitting for a long time. The pipes more or less looked like what you see above. The character is one who has been left to guard something for years and years and years. Standing in more or less one place, with limited activity. Hence the pipe-like detail. I am going to try to add a few of the rustruns, though, as well as some oil seapage stains.

I think the texture looks fantastic!

I wonder how it is done.. it looks great

It's not that tough if you have the base texture, and some good reference material. For examples, pictures of rusted cars and what not helped with this one. I also have some photos of old pitted metals that helped here as well. You apply the mats, set up your bump settings and lighting, and voila -- realism! Would you like a step-by step on that? LOL. Seriously, I could set up a tut for it if you'd like, but I;m sure there are better ones out there.

Hey there buddy! Looking tops so far. Can't wait to see the final product. (And no barnacles!)
artroland
Hey Raymond -- took me a second there to figure out the Barnacle comment. Didn't realize it was you. Stonemason wrote back and suggested a couple of software changes to paint in 3d as opposed to working in photoshop. I'll have to check them out. Ta!

Excellent texture work... it's going to take buckets of WD-40 to bring this guy back to operable condition. :o)
