Description

For over a decade I provided cover art for the program books of Icon, the annual Iowa City Iowa science fiction convention founded by author Joe Haldeman. This convention the Artist Guest of Honor was Patricia "P.D." Breeding-Black. She's best known for her exquisite illustrations and covers for the Talislanta RPG series. She was also a fixture at Renn Faires in Illinois and Minnesota. Pat was the spark that got me interested in doing fantasy art as an adult. In her senior college year, she exhibited a nude self-portrait of herself as a sucuubus. I saw it as a high school senior visiting that school on a preview weekend. Looking at her fantasy self-image hanging there on an alcove wall, something went "sproing!" in my brain..... Anyway, I added a couple pastiches to Pat here on the artshow. Pat's succubus is carrying a painting. My teddy-bear alter ego hangs a parody of Pat's "Elven Warrior" painting. His roady jacket is emblazoned "Black Bear Breeding Done Pat". Let's see.... what else.... Starting from upper left-- a pair of Wally Wood style flng saucers. Dr Who and the TARDIS stand on the Enterprise's transporter stage. Godzilla looms over the Pentacrest, the original building at the University of Iowa. Demons named Jimmy, Jerry and Pat defile the "Angel Young" statue (photo shown earlier in my gallery). The Pat-succubus carries a painting of Mobile Suit Gundam. Below that is "Tharok's Sister" (also shown earlier). The robot is one I painted a lot in the 80s (look for his appearances later). A Cerberus puppy chases the Cat From Outer Space past a generic barbarian hero celebrating major overkill. I'd recently discovered Jeff Wayne's rock musical "War of the Worlds" and was on a tripods kick (see my "Thunderchild" posted earlier). A generivc wizard casts a generic visually flashy spell. And finally, I painted myself in a 30s-style pulp cover rescuing the damsel.
