Description

Guangzhou (also called Canton), situated at the mouth of the Pearl River is the Capital of Guangdong Province. For hundreds of years, most of China's foreign trade came through here. At times, this was the only place where foreigners were allowed to trade with the 'Middle Kingdom'. The British fought the first 'Opium War' in 1839

@pimbotin: 1. Stop blaming everyone else for your problems (you French are nearly as bad as the Americans) 2. You should know that the Chinese invented EVERYTHING, gunpowder the printing press etc etc (except for Emmental cheese of course).

Not only do I enjoy reading a little history that goes along with this wonderful photograph, but also the coments that appear to start a riot of sillyness. Have a great day my friend.

A wonderful sculpture! Looks like they're calculating some numbers for a transaction on an abacus. Great history lesson, Charles! But please, don't judge any of us by the politics of the lands in which we live :)
