Description
When I was ten years old, I was invited to have supper at my best friend's home. It was the first time I had ever tasted turnip. At first sample I was actually terrified... it was such a foreign flavor and yet it was somehow exotic enough that I couldn't dismiss it as poison right away. Intriguing in a love/hate sense. It was also the first time that I would meet someone who was older than my grandmother. My friend's great aunt was seated next to me at the dinner table. She was very old and very frail... and in my young mind I thought she was the reason we all had to eat turnip.
She seemed unaware of me throughout most of the meal... but just before dessert was served (cheesecake... another first for me) she leaned down and stared into my face. I put my hands in my lap and stayed very still... the turnip terror now replaced with a general feeling of unease... and she whispered into my ear, "One day someone is going to run away with those big, brown eyes of yours".
That night... safely home and in my own bed... I wrote about this turn of events in my diary. And I remember ending the entry with, "... so if someone is going to run away with my brown eyes, please let it be Paul McCartney"...
UF for fractal and frame... with sig in PSP. Thanks so very much to all of you for your kind words and good wishes on my last upload... you guys make everything so much better... honestly... and thank you for taking the time to have a look at this one... :) Hugs! Helen

I saw the title, looked at the image, harvested some memories of my own, and then read your story. What a wonderful story and it brought back even more memories for me. Have you eaten any turnips lately? Guess I don't need to ask about Paul since I know you didn't get him. Your story will have me smiling all day.

What a thoroughly delightful and beautifully expressed memory. I smiled (especially at the Paul McCartney bit..and got goose bumps, as I almost felt what you were going through at the dinner table. I love your image, Helen; such an appealing design and flow..and with beautiful coloring and excellent lighting. A rich feeling and wonderful yesteryear feel/mood. Outstanding work!

Thank you for the laugh and the gorgeous eyecandy! Really, I laughed out loud when I read what the friend's great aunt had to say and I'm still grinning from ear-to-ear! Sorry Paul wasn't the fellow.. but had he had the opportunity to gaze into them, he very well might have stolen you away! ;) xoxoxox

Your writing is superb - exactly captured what it feels like to be a child in a grown up world where nothing quite makes sense - and your fractal is superb too. Hope things are getting better for you now Helen and thank you for sharing your memories.

When I was small, and just a boy, I looked up to the stars, I saw a single bright red sun, and knew that it was Mars, And since that time, til even now, I have no fear at all, Since I have faced the warrior god, and know I shall not fall. Quite stunning art.

Paul McCartney? I always liked John and George better, but from a completely different point of view. This really does bring back a lot of memories, my grandma always cooked turnips as well. While I ate them, and even did until a few years ago when I just forgot about them, I guess I never really liked them very much. I actually knew a guy at UMass who was doing his graduate work on waxing turnips and rutabagas for shipping and marketing. Finding the right mixture of waxes and temperature, etc. Sounds kind of strange but my wife's graduate work was on cloning tomato embryos and onion seed production. When I was teaching middle school I used to ask some students, "Do you think I just fell off the turnip truck?" Then didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Beautiful work, a true garden of earthly delights, I even see some onions in there! Terrific!

Beautiful memory fractal. I enjoyed your story/memory. We grew up eating turnips; mostly raw from our garden. Delicious. And cheesecake! Yes as we had a cow with lots of rich cream and milk. I always dreamed of Clark Gable which reveals my age.

Lovely turnip tale and a beautiful image of memories. My surprise veggie was parsnips. Who knew they would be sweet?

Mmmm! I love turnip best when it's mashed with a little milk and butter and lightly salted. Goes really well with haggis (Scottish delicacy! Lol!) and mashed potatoes! Mmmm! Your fractal is a real delicacy, too! :)

It would'nt be Thanksgiving without turnip and squash, the only time I have them. Terrific story and image.
