Description

This is the top, well almost the top, of Cadillac Mountain on Mt.Desert Island, Maine. This is supposedly the highest point on the eastern coast of the US at 1,530 feet. Not very impressive by Himalayan standards but this is right next to the Atlantic Ocean. Actually the real summit, where the USGS benchmark marker is, is located about 100 yards away up on another little peak where the tourists never go because the view isn't as dramatic. The fence was put up to keep people from walking on and destroying the delicate plant life, where this boulder came from I have no idea. A glacial erratic I suppose, but it's hard to imagine the ice being so thick not so long ago. The trees up here are all very stunted and bent. It gets pretty cold and windy during the winter.

Quite wonderful scenic composition! That boulder is surely worn from one type of erosion on another. Well done indeed!

Beautiful view! Maybe that fence is there to keep people like me from pushing that boulder into the ocean just to see how big the splash is!? ;) Gorgeous image Jack! :)

What a large beautiful rock! A bit of the Earth to remind us of her stunning grace.

Very nice picture! I'm wondering what the composition would look like if you had moved farther to the left and opened up a gap between the tree and the rock. Maybe also move in closer so the tree frames the left side and the rock frames the right side. That might look real neat!

I once bought a picture painted on foil from a street merchant who walked into the Bloody Duck club that had a boulder in the middle like this. Zounds! It is the same picture. Not Shinto at all.

What a view! That rock is quite astonishing. Was it a long hike up there? The ocean looks cold right now, I can bet it would be cold in winter. Wonderful pic, thanks for sharing.

This is quite a contrast within itself. Water, foliage, stone, and the hand of man, of course...A unique spot, and I love the way it portrays the potential harshness of the climate.

The boulder is AWEsome, and I like the glacial rock formations on the ground. Great depth and perspective. An incredible scene and an excellent shot!

Very fine composition. Although on the opposite coast, it reminds me of scenes from my childhood.
