Description

Sha'a'an (pronounced Shah-AH-ahn) is an Orange. Her direction is the West. They are deep thinkers and keen observers. They tend to be more reserved than Yellows or Greens, but less so than Whites. Sha'a'an is the third and next-to-youngest daughter of Vahlois and his deceased second wife, Sindia. K'nishi (Kah-NEE-shee), the Elder, is her grandfather. Her full sisters are Liiih and Omanii and Rey'ch'el is her half-sister and foster mother. As a child she was a gifted player of the z'jahn, a stringed instrument something like a cello, only somewhat smaller with a tone about halfway between that of a cello and a violin. All of this was taken away from her and she was forced to take up training in the Scout Guild in order to go on a shoosh'tah-dai ("Raid of Silence") in the Old Lands to recover the Master "B'ha'an ("Power-box") because of a vision seen by her younger sister, Omanii. On that raid, in addition to the B'ha'an, Newman, a human is found and the pair later become the sole survivors of that ill-fated shoosh'tah-dai. It falls upon Newman to handle the Power-box because it cannot be safely handled by a child and it falls upon the novice scout to lead them back to the New Lands and safety--even though she has never actually made the trip back herself. For two years, pursued vigorously by the Bhar-kar-d'esh (The "Ghostly Ones"), the pair wander the Old Lands and the Middle Forest and climb the Uldon-pahl, the "Great Wall," a sheer cliff that stretches over a thousand miles across the continent. They are the only people do do so and to cross the High-Wilderness beyond it. During that time Sha'a'an matures into a young woman and eventually, She and Newman become lovers. Then when they are almost through the High Wilderness, they go over a large cascade and when Sha'a'an regains consciousness, she cannot find Newman. Believing him dead, she resolves to continue on toward the New Lands because the Master B'ha'an holds the key to her people's survival and only she has some notion of where it might be. For the next half of a year, the Orange travels toward the New Lands acccompanied only by her bitter thoughts of a Messiah who might have been and a deep grief for her sweet-brother. At some point, Sha'a'an realizes that she has missed an important landmark and is far off course for the New Lands. Half-mad with loneliness and grief, the Orange is found by the crew of a H'lomeh ship returning from a voyage of discovery and they agree to let her accompany them back to the New Lands. Unfortunately, a storm wrecks the ship and the survivors, including Sha'a'an, are marooned on a large desert island. Evenually, they are able to build a smaller sailboat and return to the New Lands, where Sha'a'an learns that her father, Vahlois, has been made the High-Prince.
