Description

Farm Life J. M. Strother My father's birth date is April 2nd, which always seemed too close to April Fool's Day for comfort. When I was a child he always like to tell a story about when he was growing up on a small farm in Virginia. Then, as now, farming was an inherently risky business and then, as now, no one gave an iota of concern about child labor on a farm. It was expected. Don't get me wrong. My father had very loving and caring parents. But farm work's gotta get done. Of course when they were small they were not expected to do any seriously heavy work, and certainly nothing dangerous. They probably started out with simple chores, like feeding the chickens and collecting eggs in the hen house (which incidentally carries its own risks

Hi, thanks for this story, it brought back a lot of memories for me as well and it was interesting too as the punch line, although I should have expected it, I did not Excellently done, and againthanks. P.S. Ever been snipe hunting? Warm Smiles Awethe memories of life on the farm and the days of hard work, yet at the end of any day, one would truly have a feeling of accomplishment. As also I must admit as much as I drank it, I never truly acquired a taste for pure out of the cow, cows milk laugh out loud, as later I found out from more then my share of emergency room visits trying to figure out what was wrong with me.Oh my the pain. I am lactose intolerantha-ha.

Glad you liked it. Fresh cow's milk was a bone of contention between my Mom and my Grandmother. Mom stayed at the farm with my oldest brother while my dad was overseas during WWII. Grandma never could figure out why Mom insisted on going into town to buy pasteurized milk when they had all that perfectly good milk fresh from the cow. Who can figure them city folk out? My dad always joked about taking gullibles snipe hunting (though I doubt he ever really did). He was very shocked to find out that there really are snipes! http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i2300id.html Don't look like they'd be good eating though. :-) jon
