Owl Butterflies by TwoPynts
Open full image in new tabDescription
Owl butterflies are large, brown, tan and black butterflies from tropical areas. The Owl Butterfly (family Brassolidae, genus Caligo memnon) is one of Amazonia's largest species. The large eyespots on the wings serve either to scare a potential predator or to misdirect an attack away from the body (since predators will often first attack the eyes of prospective prey). Flipped upside-down & held open, the overall pattern resembles the face of an owl, a defensive measure against predators. They prefer to spend the heat of the day perched upon a tree trunk, within the forest shade. They feed during the cooler dawn & dusk times on rotting fruits. They have a wingspan of about 15 centimeters/6 inches. The forewings of many owl butterfly species are iridescent. The two front legs of this butterfly are very small. While the caterpillars feed on the leaves of certain plants, the adult Owl Butterfly feeds exclusively on fermenting fruit. It's a habit which can result in the giant butterfly literally keeling over in a drunken stupor. My kinda insect! Alcohol intake aside most adult butterflies live for only a few weeks. The one on the left appears to have damaged its wing. Don't drink and fly! =o] ----- OWL BUTTERFLY Caligo memnon (eurilochus?) Classification: Kingdom: Animalia (Animals) Phylum: Mandibulata (Invertebrates) Class: Insecta (Insects) Order: Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths) Family: Nymphalidae (Brush-footed Butterflies | Admirals, Fritillaries, Emperors, Satyrs and Milkweeds) Subfamily: Brassolidae (Owl Butterflies) Genus: Caligo Species: memnon (eurilochus?) Common name: Owl Butterfly ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your up close and personal comments on yesterday's photo, Alien Eyes.
