Description

Since a couple of you asked me to answer the same Q's: See previous thread: "Who is this Art guy?" 1) What is your personal definition of art? This is a big one, though in fact it is (To me) pretty simple. Human beings communicate through many means, all of which appeal to our sensory organs which allow us to perceive our world. In my humble opinion, any method/medium used to communicate a thought or emotion to another person can be art. The defining factor is how it is communicated. Any time one takes that extra effort, be it aesthetically, creatively, humorously or thoughtfully, to imbue that communication with something more than the raw information, they are adding "Flare". Now how they do it, and to what degree, is where "Art" separates itself from the mundane. 2) What galleries do you most frequent? When I am "free" surfing, I go with the ALL category, and whatever thumbnails jump out at me (See previous thread). Beyond that, I spend most of my time checking out galleries of those artists I have had the fortune to bump into. Look at my fav artist list! It keeps me very busy. 3) What genres are your favorite? I like everything, "Variety is the spice of life". But I would be a liar if I did not admit I have favorites. Generally speaking, anything SC-FI or Fantasy is my favorite. I am also a sucker for anything that makes me smile or laugh. 4) What art do you put on your walls/desktop at home? Throughout our house, my wife hangs art that she likes, mostly faeries and stuff, and I like it all. My office, when finished, will have my art, a map of Middle Earth, and a framed uncut sheet of Wacky Package Stickers from the 70's, to start with. My desktop on my computer changes constantly, sometimes my works, others works, sometimes the dogs. 5) What images do you most often comment on? I often comment on images when I think the artist needs the encouragement. I have been making art in a vacuum for decades, and though I have a healthy ego that enjoys the frequent "Tummy rub", I would still do it anyway, for me. As someone here so aptly observed "I'l bet your school notebooks were full of doodles." That is why I finally turned off rankings, I really dont worry about ranks, just peoples thoughts. So I try to encourage other artists that are taking a chance, and sticking it out there in the public. When another artist requests ranking, I view it thus: If they appear to have accomplished what they set out to do, I give them a great or excellent. If they fell short of what they were trying to communicate, I either refrain from comment, or when I think there ego can take it, I offer constructive criticism. But I never leave a low ranking, I see no purpose in crushing peoples spirit, and as mom always put it If you have nothing nice to say 6) What images do you hesitate to comment on? For the most part I avoid comment on anything done just for the "Shock" value, a lame attempt at getting attention. I loath Poser nudies without purpose. This site has gotten much better, and I think the community here has really matured. I was once accused of having a problem with the human body! Nothing could be further from the truth, I am a man, a dirty old one at that! ; ) But there is in my mind a clear line between artistic nudes (Which I like) and porn-ish pinups. That having been said, I love some pinups, like Vargas etc. 7) Are you inhibited in anyway due to technology i.e. a slow modem? We used to have a slow computer, and a slow modem. It was hard then to get around to all the people who's art I wished to view and comment on. Now I have a very fast computer, and we have a high speed cable modem. Ironically, I have merely increased my viewings/comments exponentially! So instead of taking less time to surf, I spend more time and view/comment on much more.
