A Tiger for Mea (Photoshop) www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php
Â
I have been drawing since I was 11, some 33 years ago.
My 6th grade teacher, Mr. Knoss, was a great artist and I greatly admired his illustrations. He encouraged me to pursue my artistic interests at a crucial time in my development.
My High School art teacher "Vern", was also a great influence. He always challenged me to try different things.
I was lucky that my parents were very supportive of my interest in art. I studied at The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1986-1990). Where I was humbled by many great artists that were far more talented than I. There it was that I rounded out my fine art skills, and then chose to major in Media Arts. Studied film, video and sound. Learned all the skills needed to shoot, direct, edit those mediums.
While pursuing a Media Arts major, I discovered computer graphics, still in it's infancy. This is where I came to an Epiphany. Here was a new medium, that incorporated everything I had previously learned into one new medium. Not only that, but it had new dimensions, interactivity, feedback, randomness, AI. I was hooked.
The next 17 years I learned and grew with the industry. Learning everything from how to create and manipulate digital imagery and create animations, to interface design and interactive authoring. My day job is an Information Architect, a fancy term for software interface design.
A few years back, my wife and I hit on some difficult times (As many people do) and it was during a very dark time in our lives that I discovered what became Renderosity, Initially I posted work, merely as a way to get myself back into the discipline of making new art.
I was delighted to find a world-wide community of talented artists, exchanging ideas and art!! I was thrilled! I have learned so much from you, and your art has brightened up my world. I am lucky to have made some great friends here, and I aim to do tributes to all of you!

-=I tend to agree with you. I have seen wonderful works here that get NO attention. this tends to be a rendo thing though I have found. rarely do I find it at any of the other online galleries I frequent=- 1)What is your personal definition of art?-something that truely moves another person. that elicites a deep emotional response. to me, something that is beautiful even in an ugly way. 2)What galleries do you most frequent?-to many to list 3)What genres are your favorite?-I love gothic art and erotic art. but anything can strike me deeply. 4)What art do you put on your walls/desktop at home?-intense work. work that makes you stop and look. for walls something that tends to elicit some sence of sensuality. not sexuality;) 5)What images do you most often comment on?-a piece I see well done, unigue or just plain beautiful. 6)What images do you hesitate to comment on?-those that tend to need work and I know the person wont take the critique kindly, or work that is the same, that never changes or looks like five thousand other pieces. 7)Are you inhibited in anyway due to technology i.e. a slow modem?-yes I tend to get bogged down with a low end puter. my puter at home is so old it almost has a pull string to start it lol.

1)What is your personal definition of art? Anything creative. 2)What galleries do you most frequent? No one in particular, just go through all galleries and click on what looks interesting. 3)What genres are your favorite? Anything that is creative, non-Vickie, something that took some work and thought, makes a point, or makes me smile or wonder. 4)What art do you put on your walls/desktop at home? Art, sculpture and photos done by people I know. 5)What images do you most often comment on? Anything unusual or where you can tell someone put a lot of work/thought into it even if the final product is lacking. 6)What images do you hesitate to comment on? Pinups. 7)Are you inhibited in anyway due to technology i.e. a slow modem? No.

OK I will try this again. 1.My difinition of art is the ability to create or recreate a thought or vision into something that inspires emotion be it good or bad from its viewers. 2.I normally post in poserpeople. 3.people and pin ups 4. I like the 1920's Art Deco erra. 5. I comment on anything that is done with concerns of the female form. Reason is as a self taught artist in pencil, pastels, oils and sculptures the female form is the hardest to draw or duplicate. I hope that in my comments I may help someone look at it differnetly to make changes or suggest any fine tuning that will help. 6. Cartton, male form, anything that degrades the female form like overly large breast etc. 7. No I am not. I would like to say however that I find your inquiry interesting because I had the same question as you. My images "Shear" at first got 149 views and no comments and since I changed the thumbnail it is up to 240 5 rankings and 8 comments. I found this to be very important when posing a thumbnail make sure it is appealing as well. I thought the reason why we post our images are for two reason the first of course is vanity "hey look at what I did" but also to get input form the masters as well as the beginners with suggestions and comments on what to do or even not to do. I have put really bad images out here that got no comments and I also put a few good one out that equally did not get comments. WHen I post instead of reading "hey great job, keep up the good work" I would rather see the praise (who wouldn't ) as well as "hey I do not like this because of..... or "the hair is not right trry this". Hopefully your inquiry will spark others with the same question

This is fabulous! Thank all of you (So far) for leaving such detailed comments! : ) Please don't feel you have to answer all, or any of the above 7 Q's, they are just there to get things rolling. I will save my opinions for later, though most of you already know (From my work & comments) where I'm coming from. This is GREAT! just what I was hoping for! Thanks gang! (Eric)

1)Art is the expression of oneself, a form of communication 2)Photo, 2D, MM, Bryce & C4D 3)surrealism, weird, alternative, people 4)my own, Southwest, Impressionism... photos, paintings & sketches by friend's 5)those that strike my fancy, faves, commenters on mine, & those that need help or have few comments 6)when i'm at a loss of where to begin to improve an image short of dumping it & starting over, TOSable images, & those posted for the sexual hits alone that have no redeeming value in my mind but mostly it's because i've run out of time, the photo gallery keeps me plenty busy 7) no :] (sorry, ebot, ebot, ebot.. kept thinking of more, done now :) lol
Mea
1)Art is visual expression that conveys a thought of somekind, be it a feeling, a story, a mood, or even just a moment. 2)When I have a chance to browse, I tend to start with "General/All" and wait for something to catch my eye. I do freqent "Sotyr Sequential" for obvious reasons ;) and comic/cartoon for similar reasons. 3)Don't exactly have a favorite genre, but I do tend to lean towards the whole "fantastic" area: superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy. Mostly I look for something that tends to stand out to my eye. 4)Mostly my own stuff and my friends. I know a couple of traditional artists who send me stuff which I have framed. Desktop and stuff I use my own stuff and change it out by mood. 5)Hard to say. It's kind of a nebulous "I like that" kind of thing. Something clicks, I look at the image, I like it or I see something with potential and I leave a note. 6)Generic pinusp. I am so sick to death of pinups, unless there's something really striking or unusual to me about it, I generally won't say anything. 7)I got a dial up connection at home due to the only broadband is run by a company who's given me lousy service in the past, so slow browsing, but I'm patient.

I don't have a definition for Art and I don't understand the need to define everything. I only browse the photography gallery but do comment on some other mediums from people I know around here (u being one of them). Favorite genre, well, anything that I find appealing! No specific genre really but I'm attracted to simple things. On my walls are Indian tapestries from Rajhastan, some encrusted with 'lil pieces of mirrors, different kind of masks and that's about it. Dekstop is a view of the desert. The images I comment on are the ones that I find beautiful, that appeal to me for one reason or another, being the mood or the colors or the subject or the compo or all of these together. I usually don't comment on what I find ugly or crappy. Very interested thread u started here Eric! Now I'd like YOU to answer those questions! ;)

Okay Pascale, I will make a few revelations: I have seen (As many I'm sure) my fill of many "Types" of images. It is hard to be alive in our modern culture, without being bombarded by certain "Types" of images. That being said, I look for, or react to, those images that have a different, unique or exceptionally "Awesome" look to them. Example: I have seen hundreds of images of sunsets/sunrise. They are ALL beautiful, but it's gotten to the point where I feel like a stock photography employee, and my eye's roll back into my head! Then I see a sunrise like the one Kort (TwoPynts) recently posted, and I say WOW!!! The subject is the same as all the others I've seen, but Korts image gripped my eyes. That's what I look for. I scan thumbnails very quickly, all genres, and I have seen many crappy thumbnails that hide great images (What a shame). If I am not familiar with the artist and the thumbnail sucks, I don't bother with them. If I know the artist is good and trust the quality of their work, then I trust the thumbnails. Bottom line, somanyartistssolittletime.

Wow! Now that's an honest perspective! I agree with many of those points. But here is where I have heard many arguments breakout. Wall paper, many would say is "Craft". Though I have seen some wallpaper that I personally feel has wonderful artistic qualities. The advent of digital software that allows people to create images (Even if they can't draw stick figures) has revolutionized the art community. I know some people, whom merely disregard the medium of "Digital art" as being non-art. I personally disagree with this opinion for a couple of reasons: 1) It isn't as easy as pushing a button and spinning a few dials, and POOF you've created art. Just look at some of the push & dial postings, and you know what I mean. 2) A real "Artist" transcends the medium. The best artists that I know, could make a beautiful image from dried feces. That having been said, when I first started posting here, I posted my drawings and paintings, "Fine art" as it is often referred to. Because I wanted to show the background I came from, and therefore the foundation from which I create my 3D work. So I think that Poser & Bryce and all the other digital programs, are just tools, like a paint brush or a lump of clay. What you do with it can be art, but it requires more than push & spin.
Lorraine
1.I think art expresses a unique perspective infused with "something" from the artist 2. I do not limit myself to R's galleries, I tend to stick to poser to see what others get this program to do..3.I tend to look at the artist's goals more than a type, though i am partial to digital art because there is a real enthusiasm for expression based on the "program" as a tool; 4. changes all the time...5. comments just seem to apply or 6. they do not...again it is the unique input from the artist that usually catches my attention...7. I have become a techno-enthusiast, that is I like to get the faster bigger better wiz-toys at least the ones I can afford...then I use them until they die...haha

sorry ... i do would like answer but my english is too bad...In first i will try to understand your comments.. thank you for this discussion.
Richardphotos
I consider art to be something I find merit in and I enjoy viewing. I comment on any and everything. many times I will comment on work and the artist is unknown to me because many people looked but did not take a second for some words of thought. I remember when I first started posting that no one hardly commented except a few select people that gave me encouragement. because of that encouragement I tried harder at the quality of my work. Technology does not scare me because I can screw up the best of them. I tend not to care about heavily used "stick it on's"

I personally define 'art' as a visual, tactile or auditory representation of a person's idea or feeling .Good art,is when I like it,lol.No.I'm kidding. There is plenty of art I do not either understand nor appreciate, but that doesn't make it bad.In terms of galleries,I would say that I almost exclusively visit the photography gallery here, but occasionally I have gone to the 2D gallery.I actually don't have a favorite genre.I like all kinds of things.I do have a particular dislike however. When I was going for my MFA there were a number of students who were making single color canvasses and calling that 'art' a la Rauschenberg.I found that a waste of good canvas.A painted white canvas with nothing on it is not art to me.Okay, maybe once as some kind of joke or statement, but when it is done repeatedly, then it strikes me as inane and ridiculous...The art on my walls is all my own.Frankly it's because it doesn't make sense for me to buy someone else's work when I have my own.But also because my paintings are like my children.I could never part with them. They are based on old family photographs and so they are very personal to me...I comment on what I like and the work of people who are important to me here.I also comment on work that might be flawed but since everyone deserves encouragement I try to be as positive as I can with them as well.So basically that leaves very little out.Unfortunately most of the time I am only able to comment on the pics I get an e-bot for.I wish that were not the case because I know there are many talented people here that I am totally unaware of.Hmmm.What do I hesitate to comment on?Occasionally in the galleries there are 'violent' type images.I won't comment on those. And the really bad (and I mean BAD) nude photography.I just ignore that completely.Having seen a few here I'd just as soon not waste my time viewing them.Besides,I don't think those people are putting those pics up to get comments any way.And lastly,I am not hampered by a slow modem or any other such thing. The only thing that in any way 'inhibits' me,to quote you,is my own lack of knowledge.I have come late to computers and digital art and I therefore have much to learn....I hope that answers your questions,Eric. What an interesting idea for an upload. Now I shall go read what everyone else has said so I can feel lousy about what I wrote, lol! Have a great evening my friend :)

Another great point Marlene! I had similar experiences. There were students I knew that would study art history, and choose simple stuff that they could easily replicate (Dada, Pollock etc..) and then spent 15 minutes on their project, and in class drone on and on (Regurgitating the history they learned). Great for learning art history, but I don't call that "Art", I call it "kissing the teachers arse to get a good grade." The people, who's art I most admired, said very little about their work, they were too busy making it.

Whoa!...art has never had a definition,only opinion...so let's all chill,enjoy and learn,that's why we're here,right?..now about the pic....{?}...'nuff said!

Art is what I like...not only on rendo but everywhere in life.. I look at everything in every gallery and wish I had more time to do so ..I can see something beautiful in anything.. and I tried no to sit in judgment of what is good or not.. . I migrated to Australia for sun.. sea and surf .and this is what i love most and put on my walls .. . I do my graphics for myself but i found that I had this need to show them. so Im just happy to be able to do so.. I dont allow comment on it;; for the simple reason that... there is so many people out there... some will like them and some will not. it all balance itself out. if i was a painter. I would show my painting in galleries. but i wouldn't necessarily need to know what everyone thinks of it. ..Depending on other peoples approval can be quiet soul destroying and can inhibit your workI tried various software and I m master of none. I want to try everything and all my graphics are from my heart. and how I feel.. Im grateful to my son who is in the computer business and I get.. up grade and software all the time.. for half the costabout the nudity ..and posers. Most man love to look at beautiful woman. Making them more like rubens painting would not be too popular..it doesnt worry me ..nudity or anything else. but too much of one things becomes very boring.. Also we should all remember that computer is a young people, s medium and woman of 63 like me are pretty rare on renderosity.. one wonder what will rendo be like 50 years from now. Bye the way.... I m glad you ask the questions and and looks like most of us couldnt wait to give you some answers. hope you get time to read them alllolcheers

When you said Pop(ular) you got it right. The masses as they are normally don't frequent galleries that are not on a long list of friend or internet buddies, people are bound to do better the more they network. I'm not saying this is bad! this is just the way i've seen the world work, it's who you know that gets you places not what you can do.(this is not a slander to anyone i hope no one takes it that way lol)1)What is your personal definition of art? Are you kidding? :P It's an expression of the voices in my head, i guess that the best way to describe it. 2)What galleries do you most frequent? I have quite a few favs that generate on the top 20 all the time, but that's really how i found them. From time to time i look into the galleries and see fresh ideas and imaginative thinking-those people go right on favs. art isn't just about the technical skills of a person, and unfortunatly that is not often seen. it can be funny, fun, sad, whatever, not just "well painted" to call it art. 3)What genres are your favorite? all, but i mostly paint sci-fi fantasy 4)What art do you put on your walls/desktop at home? my friends, see? you tend to favor those you know either IRL or connected to on the internet 5)What images do you most often comment on? images that don't seem to have a worthy amount of comments. Sometimes it feels like great artists arn't getting the encouragment and feedback to want to continue, so i comment in the hopes they will fuel my creative process in the future with sharing more. 6)What images do you hesitate to comment on? blatent nudity with no point. 7)Are you inhibited in anyway due to technology i.e. a slow modem? Software costs are rediculous, i've already fallen far behind technology and wonder when i can make the money to buy upgrades. Anyhow this is the kind of discussion that is mostly based on opinion and a little based on personal experience. everyone will see the world differntly, and that's what makes art so great, you never know what your gonna see next.

1 Anything that has been made with creativity ...anything that makes you wonder...anything that make you think or laugh...art gives me pleasure to look at. 2 I look at all the galleries...it depends sometimes on what I am working on myself.....but I must admit that a thumbnail usual is the main factor to look or not to look... 3 Depends on my mood... 4 At home I have a wonderful bright-colored modern painting...and on my desktop something that catches my eye...something funny...a beautiful flower...anything that touches me...almost every week another one.... 5 Images I like...Images that took a lot of work...Images that move me or make me laugh...Images that are unusual... 6 Images that need a lot of improvement...My own images are not that good that I feel confident enough to say something about it....I sometimes send an IM... Images I do not like... 7 The only thing that bothers me is time...not enough hours in a day.... Interesting thread you started here... Talk to ya later ..bye

Great stuff! Reminds me of a quote (Unkown) "I don't know what art is, but I know what I like!" Seems to fit everyone!

Aww Kim! What a fabulous brain dump! And I agree with your bee analogy! I love the phrase "Distracted by bright shiny things". I am just as easily distracted. And I love your rambling! ; )

WOW look at the long bookk this is !!! boy and i just woke up... ... very creative this post as you are working so hard on something else ;o)... i love the fact that your creativity has no walls or limits.. i understand what your talking of.. i have put 20 hours into an image and gotten 20 comments then taken a simple shot that i thought was boring and got 70 comments so the whole thing is a mystery to me... i do know that people are like little bees attracted to catchy title s and bright colors something they can relate to. i try not to hang out in one catagory i like to go to the main gallery and see everyones work. i turned off the ebots but then turned them back on ..i think good art is all about creativity and composition doing something unique and something that makes one think hard about it ... something that when they walk away and go get a snack outta the frigde that image is still with you .. you do that for me that bush monkey and zebra merry go round have gone places with me in my head.. oh i am not answering all the questions in order or probally correctly but then again i never do anything normally thats my problem in life ...LOL!! my mom always tells every oh dont mind her she cant help it shes the artist in the family !!! LOL!!!!.... i enjoy sharing on her. and enjoy people like you who make this place special and wonderful to come on to!!! sorry i rambled..LOL!! cant help that either...its as natural as downing four cups of coffeee in them morning after playing with a pic al night hahaha... ♥ !!! :O)!!!

OK, here I go. lol. 1)What is your personal definition of art? Any kind of creative expression is art, IMO. Now whether it's art I like that's a whole different question. ;-) 2)What galleries do you most frequent? Mostly I just visit renders of stuff my friends have done, or things that catch my eye when I'm uploading. 3)What genres are your favorite? Well, I'm a fantasy addict, no question about it. And I love landscapes. 4)What art do you put on your walls/desktop at home? Not that much, really. Photos, a poster of San Diego's skyline at night (I was born there), some Renoir and some Monet (I love Impressionism). 5)What images do you most often comment on? Ones my friends did. lol. 6)What images do you hesitate to comment on? Gratuitous violence and nudity, boring ones, fractals (because I don't think I know enough about them to make any useful comments). Stuff I don't like or don't understand. 7)Are you inhibited in anyway due to technology i.e. a slow modem? Yeah, lack of a Time Turner thing like in Harry Potter. :-P I would gallery surf (and comment) a lot more, but I honestly don't have the time. :-(

Naked Vickies In A Temple With A Sword ! Now that's art ! Oh yeah,........and shiny spheres floating over a reflective surface.

Man, you ask some tough questions. I guess I have to go with sackrat on this one. Just let me add, you gotta have your puppy dog and kitty cat photos too. And sad clowns.... ;oP Seriously, 1) Art is any creative expression that moves me or makes me think. 2) The photo, though I browse the others ocassionally. 3)Photography (genre?), fantasy, sci-fi...and landscape/nature. 4) My wife's paintings, my photos and 3D work, family photos, and select works by fellow artists and masters (Dali, Alex Grey, etc.) I put space images on my desktop...I like it dark. :) 5) Photos, but any image that moves me in some way, or makes me think, "Man, I wish I'd thought of that/taken that photo. 6) Ones that don't make me feel anything, good or bad. 7) Yes, at home I have a measly 19" monitor and 56K modem. I do most of my surfing at work on a T1 and 23" flatscreen. =o] Great questions Eric!
