Description

"I want to marry a lighthouse keeper And keep him company. I want to marry a lighthouse keeper And live by the side of the sea. I'll polish his lamp by the light of day So ships at night can find their way. I want to marry a lighthouse keeper Won't that be okay! We'll take walks along the moonlight bay Maybe find a treasure too. I'd love living in a light house, HOW 'BOUT YOU?" --selected lyrics from - I Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper (by Eigen Erika)

Our photos today show 3 different aspects of the St. Augustine lighthouse. On the left (for self proclaimed lighthouse freak kimariehere) you get a glimpse of the view from the top level as Lisa and I descend the 219 steps towards the base of the lighthouse. In the middle (for sharky_) is a nice peekaboo shot of the top of the lighthouse through the tropical foliage behind it. On the right (for tvernuccio since she would like to move to FL) is the well constructed brick lighthouse keepers quarters, located just east of the lighthouse. It is now a museum with a collection that ranges from Fresnel lenses to household furnishings to archaeological treasures. The collections also include the archives, made up of photos and documents from the 1820s to present day. In 1824, an old Spanish watchtower in St. Augustine became Florida's first lighthouse with Juan Andreau, a Minorcan, as the first lightkeeper. Originally, the lighthouse used Winslow Lewis Argand lamps for illumination. The US government improved the light's quality by installing a 4th order Fresnel lens in 1855. This light could be seen much farther than the old lamps. In the late 1860s, the US government determined that the encroaching ocean was threatening the foundation of the light station. By 1870, the old tower and keeper's quarters were no longer adequate. A new light station was needed. On October 15, 1874, the keeper extinguished the light in the old lighthouse for the last time. Keepers continued to live in the old quarters until 1876 when they moved to the new light station. Just four years later the old lighthouse crashed into the sea. There is more information about the St. Augustine lighthouse HERE. ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your far-seeing comments on yesterday's photo, St. Augustine Lighthouse Panoramas.

Well, the lyrics sure gave me a strange visual Kort. The polishing of the lamp put it over the edge for me. Besides, I thought you were happily married. Beautiful shots never the less. KP

3 very beautiful views here Kort...Most of the lighthouse on my island are static metal forms with a twirling light, very dull and uninteresting...this baby has charcter and history! Well seen and captured! Aloha!
