Description

Low Tide - Underwater Surface Caustics in D|S Working at getting sparkly highlights on the surface under water in renders through use of reflection maps. Made the images for the reflection maps with a free program called CausticGenerator. Highly recommended, easy to use, and can make huge images, which are needed when mapping textures to large surfaces. A tutorial is in the works, but thought this fairly realistic underwater surface render was ready to share. What do you think and any ideas how can it be improved? Any tips received may be tested and added to the tutorial! Credits: Docks and Dwarven Mines from Mapps Walkways by Michael Mapplebeck, AKA Mapps at Renderosity freestuff, also at www.freewebz.com/mapps Avalon Barge by TransPond at RDNA Beach by TrekGrrrl, see Renderosity freestuff Water prop is my original, you can download it from my Daz|Studio water tutorial part one if and when it is accepted and published at the Daz website. Two tutorials already submitted and a water caustics one in the works. Sure hope Daz accepts them! All comments welcome, Mcv

wow! Another great render from you! You know how i love your water effect! ^^ If i have to find something wrong... uhm... well, maybe it's the "surface"... I mean... reflections and refractions are excellent. but it's seems an iced river. But maybe is a D|S limit... u know, i'm not an expert ^^'

I really like this! I can't begin to give pointers on how to make it better because I know I couldn't even create what you have done here, but you're going a long way towards showing what D|S is capable of. I was thinking of buying Poser6, but with all I'm learning about D|S I don't think I see a need. Nice job!

I LOVE you! I can't wait for that tut! :D Also, you'll most likely get accepted b/c this is an amazing effect coming out of DS. :D Have fun with your 25 bucks voucher! lol

A very pretty image, with very real colors and textures, Miguelito. An excellent work. Congratulations.

Excellent effect. You've got the refraction angle just right!!

From the angle used in this render, the water ripples look almost like ribbons rather than water . I think this is the surface problem Kodewarrior1 noticed. It may be due either to the scale of the water surface vs the size of the bump map used, the bump strength and depth settings, or both. This scene has a much larger water prop than some earlier efforts and I think it may need a much large bump map to match and give a better render effect. The ribbon effect is not as bad under the dock, so it could also be a rightness/reflectivity issue and/or related to camera angle to the water surface. Should be both work and fun trying to get rid of this negative and get better at water renders!

Excellent effect but the Displacement Strength seems to be negative. If not already tried I would reverse the positive and the negative strength. Lower the value could also help.

I like this one. Its very interesting to see how far DS has gone, specially with the right skills of course. I like the effects, and I am amazed this even came out of DS, then again with the right masterful hands at work, who knows what else can be done. Very very owesome view, I like the water effects, and the depth seems to have a blur effect to it as it goes further, very very owesome idea, gotta try that in the future. Very well done. -V-

Never having tried this with D|S myself... I think there might be too much noise in the bump map, or the scale is off. River water should be smoother, with deeper, broader ripples, with a dip on the downstream side of pilings. It DOES do a credible job as clear ice!

Great looking water! It looks like you got the reflections and refractions just right - love the kinda sparkly look it has. I tend to agree with jroulin - the bump look a bit like they are indented. Hmm, have you tried reversing the dark and light on the bump map and trying it with just minimum displacement - very minimum. I'm no expert tho, lol. Just play around and eventually you'll find it. Excellent render!
