Description

"The sound of water escaping from mill-dams, etc., willows, old rotten planks, slimy posts, and brickwork. Those scenes made me a painter and I am grateful." --John Constable "The mill cannot grind with the water that is past." --Daniel D. Palmer "'Inconsistency is my very essence,' says the wheel. 'Raise yourself upon my spokes if you wish... but don't complain when you are plunged back down.'" --Boethius - comparing life to a great wheel

A stroll down historic St. George Street is a treat for the sense. The smell of fresh baked foods and candies waft through the air, there are countless arts and crafts to gaze upon, and the variety of people makes it an excellent place to people watch. As you near the North end of the street near the Castillo de San Marcos, you come upon this old building (well, they are almost all old) with a waterwheel slowly turning. This was the site of a gristmill back in St. Augustine's more primitive days. The old mill is now a restaurant and gift shop, but the wheel is still there, turning, turning. Through postwork I tried to achieve the look of an old Technicolor tourist postcard without going too overstaturated. It is a shame you can't see the fine details of the image at this size, the years and water have given the wall wonderful textures and colors. I posted a larger detail of it HERE so that you can appreciate the subtleties. Hey, you can even make out the person in the window there. ;oP More can be read about St. Augustine at OldCity.com. ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your chivalrous comments on yesterday's photo, Castle Otttis.

Great find Kortalouche!! I love old things and this one looks old enough to me!! Looks like there's a beautiful red balcony behind that wheel?? Would love to see that too! ;)

And I've just bought a piece of land a few meters away from that kind of oldies... I hope I'll have the same words than Sir Constable, in a few years... Cool shot!

Splendid shot of this old mild ! It's always a pleasure to see one. There are some villages in France where there are always some too. A touching sound of the past !

Wow, what a gorgeous scene. I love those old mills, but very few remain. And none around here like this. You are fortunate, but also very talented to have captured this scene so perfectly. V

Wonderful historical piece, well done and great tone control. Did you use a fisheye lens? because I get the feeling you were trying to get it all in?? and there seems to be a slight bulge towards the middle? or is it just me and my caffeine detox? LOL The sharp contrasts of colours and tones, all work in this, very well done, beautifully executed?

  • LOL, no fish-eye was used, just the normal lens affixed to this camera. I can see what you mean though, the curved pool and fencing give the impression of a bulge. *

Nice image as john has said it does suffer some lens distortion but probably not noticeably so.

Oh, awesome! Kort, you have to stop this, or I'm throwing my gear in the car and driving down to St. Augustine tomorrow. Oh, I can't do that. I'm having dinner with friends to celebrate my B-Day. And I have a interclub competition afterwards. Bummmer! OK, then on Saturday! Nope. My camera club is going to the Catskills for the foliage on Sunday. OK, next weekend! Yup! One more gorgeous picture and I am on my way!
