Description
This is a mesh I've been working on recently (based on the alien Space Jockey created by HR Giger-- 300,265 polygons (4,065,794 polygons when subpatched)--Just a few more texture tweaks and I should be done.....

I'm still trying to figure out how to achieve the semi-petrified skin that kind of looks like peeling rubber cement...
I'm not really sure how to go about capturing that texture though. You can see what I'm talking about in this ref pic (on the telescope housing and his head and arms):
see image at: http://www.seansgallery.com/newpics/SJtext1.jpg
From what I've read and been told this actually was rubber cement that was allowed to dry and then was partially peeled away. This would either require a detailed image and alpha map set, or some fancy procedural textures.
Anyone know of an easier way to achieve this? Any and all suggestions will be readily tried.

Sir, you have my utmost respect. A fantastic representation of that special moment from Alien. All it needs is that shiny wet appearance and the burned out hole in the floor where Kane is lowered to his doom...

WOW..really well done!!!! only crits is the gun is a bit even in the spec map (like a satin finish) and could use a bit more grunge. also...all the detail looks a bit soft on the gun, It does kinda work, but it looks very even in the eges. BUT...teh alien is really a thing of beauty!!! really super!! as far as your questions...here are my options. 1 paint them on..they don't seem to raise that high off teh skin. 2 maybe copy and freeze the budy mesh. delete the poly and delete most of the vertice. Then load that layer and add a small hypervoxel to it. 3 Worley has a pluggin called "disgust". It's free to peolpe who use their plugins. but even if you don't you can create it w/ procudual in the texture and bump maps. here is a reference: http://www.worley.com/media/examples/disgust/blueLight_brownegg.jpg the color is off from yours, but you get the idea!

Thanks Petes. I like the disgust and hypervoxel suggestions. I'll work on the textures and suggestions tonight.

I think this is superb work, to me the lighting appears a touch bright, and it maybe needs some mist/particulates in the atmosphere. I am in awe of your modelling ability.

Kool modelling & textures...maybe try Z-brush for the extra detail you are seeking ? Cheer's :o)
Eromanric
Is Z-brush free-ware? Because I',m short on cash right now.

So far only about 24 hours of modeling and texturing time.

first off - great modelling, great persistence, looks like a big job. About the effect - you might think about multiple passes so you can add them together in post. A render with highlights on the bottom of the model and post it with a layer-effect in photoshop (screen/multiply). And maybe a fully lit version with only white full-GI to add the yellow-ish glow on the material. Anyway, it would require some testing - but i would go that way, instead of hammering myself to make it in one pass... dunno. Else you'll have to give it a wax like shader but i dont know about that in LWlayout. Max has Brazil R/S and Vray that have that feature implemented, but it always has huge render times. Good luck, anyway looks hor ter rific
