Description

A followup to the original version of "Is This Thing On?" posted to my gallery yesterday. As I'd indicated, I wasn't happy with the PVC collar - the rest of the picture had a softer quality, and I wanted her to be wearing somethiing softer. In fact, what I really wanted her to be wearing was a turtleneck sweater. I looked through what I had and couldn't find anything that looked right, so I ended up buying the RDNA "V3 Sweater" by Colm. The fit was just right but with just an image map it looked so...flat. Enter the creation of a custom displacement map and much mucking around with various renders (this being why there's no V2) this was the result. I'm much happier with the sweater. The very chunky displacement map levels create some pretty heavy shadows which, coupled with the basic image map, result in what appears to be a chunky Arran sweater made from unbleached wool, which is more what I had in mind. However, it's still not quite right. It's still got a look that suggests that the face was stuck on top of the rest of the image. Maybe depth of field would work, but given the render time for the basic image, doing a proper render with that enabled would take days. Oh, and you'll also notice I lost the smile somewhere. So although I'm finished with the image for now, I may have one final try at some later date, to see if I can get things just right. Product credits are as with the first image (which you really should view to compare it with this one), the only differences being the removal of the PVC outfiit and the addtion of Colm at RDNA's "V3 Sweater"

She still is gorgeous even without a smile but I'm not sure if the sweater fits her better. Excellent anyway.

Very good make-up, the lips and the render are perfect.

The sweater looks great, your displacement really worked. I might suggest a light shadow to place her head correctly in the scene - ? not sure...

Yes, I think it might be the shadowing on the sweater. The default lighting is designed for the fact that the Livia figure's MAT has AO turned on and no lights use depth maps, it's all raytraced. The initial version of the sweater with the displacement looked just as flat as the version without - until I addded ambient occlusion, which brought out some depth. I think even just a single fairly dim light, enough to have her chin cast some shadow on the sweater, may do it. I'll have a try at that this weekend.
