Description

I was approached by Kurodahan Press a recently established publisher based in Fukuoka, Japan, which caters for both Japanese and English reading markets. They asked me to illustrate the front jackets for five Japanese novels in a series called Hikishio no Toki (Time of the Ebb Tide) by Mayumura Taku. This is my illustration and typography for the second book of the series. It will be printed soon. I'll execute the remaining three cover designs in the next few months as per the client's request. Thank you as always to everyone who takes the time to stop by and give me feedback on my posts :-)

By the way, to anyone who reads Japanese (which I don't), I am aware that the text on the front cover still refers to Book 1! I just didn't have the correct Japanese character to hand at the time of preparing the web version of this image.

Wonderful contrast between abstract and traditional architecture/objects. Still the SF one is abstract. There appears to be enough in this cover art to peak the curiosity of a reader. To my thinking, not knowing the title, I would think this to be about the goverment in some way and maybe disidents, old world vs. new world. Forgive me, I'm probably all wet, but couldn't help speculating since you started it by getting me hooked. LOL! Excellent cover art Jim! V

Your style & technique seems so perfectly suited to this Jim, another I'd be unable to resist if I saw the book! Fascinating & intriguing design, beautifully executed. Can't wait to see more as you complete the project ; )

Your work usually looks like to should have a Japenese infulence. A little bit cyber punk that doesn't suck.

Nice work, but personally I prefer book 1's illustration cuz it's more abstract and earthy. I'm still loving your glass panelling technique. Good one man.

If you were holding back on the first design, in this second one you seem to have pulled out all the stops with the dense shards of abstract synaptics! Must look even better at high-definition. Wasn't so sure about the background architecture at first, but I'm getting to like it more each time I view it. Now I think it hints to the plot of the story (probably) and adds depth to the design. Clear typography just right. Surprised you did it yourself as I thought you'd need a Japanese operating system? Do you know the size of the finished books? My guess they will be neat little paperbacks which are so popular here, which are even smaller that pre-80's Penguins. (Why are Western paperbacks becoming ever larger and bulky?!). Anyway, I'm sure it'll look absolutely brillant in print, you lucky bugger ;-D LOL

After I chose the font I wanted to use, the Japanese text was supplied in pre-curved form in EPS files which I imported/rasterized into Photoshop. I supplied the artwork as a Photoshop file with the text on separate layers to allow the client to tweak it if necessary. The books will be 5" x 8". By the way, as for the building, it's a famous place in Milan ;-)

Really an awsome cover Jim, love the combination of traditional buildings and your synapsed design. I also am fascinated by the typography, even if I don't understand a word :-)
