Description

Rubbed Sage J. M. Strother Rubbed sage evokes deep emotions in me. Just the smell of it brings the entire Thanksgiving feast parading through my mind, or more accurately, the perpetrations thereof. The annual fight with the half frozen turkey, trying the pry the giblets out of the cavities before frostbite sets into the fingers. Running cold water through the same cavities in a effort to make sure the turkey truly is thawed, so as to avoid any possibility of food poisoning (always a good thing to avoid). My mom and older sister, Barb, working away at the kitchen counters chopping celery and onions; the smell of the giblets boiling; the dog prancing around the kitchen nose a quiver yearning for that which he can not have. While my mom and older sister are busy in the kitchen, I am kept busy with my other sister, Betty, at the dining room table methodically chopping bread for dressing. The bread had been taken out of the wrappers the night before and placed in huge aluminum roasting pan and only lightly covered, so that it would be slightly stale by morning. It chopped easier that way, my mother insisted, and she was right. We'd chop up anywhere from four to six loaves of white bread

Nice essay, Jon. Using "rubbed sage," as your red-thread though the entire scene, worked exceptionally well. -- Dick

Wonderful piece and it invoked quite a bit of nostalgia as well. In fact, it sounds so much like when I prepared our own Thanksgiving dinner this year. The half frozen turkey part is dead on ... as well as the bread in the pot overnight. And I can almost smell the sage. Fabulous writing ... :)
