Description

This is a Huntsman spider. They are, I am assured, harmless. They are also, as you can see, pretty big and hairy, which is very startling to North American like me. I spent my childhood in Arizona, where a big, hairy spider is something to be worried about... First time I saw one of these, I think I nearly wet my pants and called for my husband (whose hand is there by the spider for size comparison), no doubt with an extremely worried look on my face. He sort of laughed and said, "Aww, it's just a Huntsman. Won't hurt you," and he proceeded to catch it in a cup and let it outside (which is what we always do with spiders if it's possible to do so). This afternoon my two little girls started shouting, "Spider! Spider!" in an excited sort of way and we went to have a look and there this spider was on a wall. I said, "Oh, gosh, it's big! Where's the camera?" while my husband went to get a container to catch it in. We eventually got this one outside on the bricks, as you can see, and it graciously stayed quite still for a while and let me take photos, staring at me with its eight eyes all the while... I guess it was just happy to be outside again and figured it'd pose for me since we were nice enough to put it where it wanted to be. I still have no idea how these great big spiders manage to get inside the house, for what it's worth.

OK. I'm not particularly "scared" of spiders,but... NO! Huh- uh! Way too big for my taste! Awesome image, though! The hand for the scale puts it over for me.

I believe it is a type of wolf spider that activly hunt their prey rather than spin a web. Although the larger spiders look scary they are mostly harmless. It's the smaller ones like the brown recluse you have to worry about.

I hate cockroaches...I mean I DETEST the bleedin' things! I hate/abhor/despise them so much that I instantly lost ALL fear of spiders when I saw one of these magnificent hunters taking out a stinkin' cockroach!.....I now let them have the run of my apt, and if I had my way, I'd buy a schmitload to breed inside my house/apt! ....Hell, I even have a few "Guarding" my coffee pot area!....Did I mention I now LOVE spiders? A tremendously beautiful specimen you got there, and masterfully captured as well! This now adorns my desktop!
