Description

Another one from my old photo album. Took all my retouching knowledge to restore. This is the best I could do :-) The little girl from my last photo seems much more happy and safe together with her sisters and brothers. Long ago, when the Sami people were nomads, The government decided that the children had to go to school. They were taken from their parents, put in schools, and were forbidden to use their own language. I guess this story applies to most native peole of the world. Nowadays most Sami people live in houses just like anyone, When the reindeer herds are wandering, the Sami men and women use modern vehicles like snowscooters and even helicopters, to follow them and gathering the herds. In old times they used "akjor" which is their word for sledges, drawn by several reindeer, in which they had all their belongings, and moved with the herds, building their homes where the herds stopped for grazing. Thanks for viewing and comments!

What a contrast of expressions amongst the children. LOL! Yes, the educational process was exactly the same with the Native Americans. A big disaster, and abusive situation. Amazing how many "religious" people participated in this. You have done a wonderful job restoring these very old photos. Not an easy task for sure. Thanks for sharing these Gun.

Great old photo. I find the shoes very interesting in how modern they look considering the age of the shot. Great series you give us here.

This is what happened to natives in Canada. Children were taken from their parents to go to schools where they were forbidden to speak their own languages. Thank you for this 'slice of life' of Sami people.

Beautiful people, and a huge shame that their traditions have been so oppressed - just like the "stolen generation" of Aboriginals here, and so many native peoples around the globe. A decade ago I became acquainted with the songs of Mari Boine Persen, a Sami native who weaves a good deal of protest for her people into her lyrics. Musically interesting too, a hybrid of instrumentation from around the world. Thanks for sharing this Gun, these are people not to be forgotten :-)

What a great image!Governments and the church has played a part in the erasing of native culture.I don't for a minute believe either God or Christ wanted the church to adopt such draconian ways.Never will they realize the value they destroy and the damage they have done.

Beautiful children. A shame what happens when wrong minded people get in power. I hate to hear people blaming 'the church'. It is wrong minded people in the churchs, not the true church, which does this abominable thing to other ethnic groups. God created Everyone in His likeness.

It is so fantastic! The Sami man I contacted to ask for permission to use his reindeer photos, have mailed me asking if I want him to locate this children now, and give me their names. Then I could send them the 50 year old photos!
