Description

Reindeer calves with their mothers "vajor" The Samis gather mothers and calves to give the calves the owner's special mark in the ears. The calves follow their mothers, and are caught with a lasso. With his knife the owner cut his combination of marks in the ears of the calves (ouch!). It doesn't hurt so much, they say, but for the viewer is seems rather filled with panic. I guess it depends mostly on that they are chased. Painted from a photo. Thanks for viewing and comments!

Wonderful painting Gun. I love how the herd disappears into the mist. You are collecting such a wonderful pictoral story of Laplander life. I always think when humans say it doesn't hurt animals to do their branding on them, what human has been branded so they can say that for sure it doesn't hurt the animal? ;)
