Description

76cm x 38cm canvas materials: bedsheet, twigs and other pieces of wood, gum nuts, two snail shells and a leaf mediums: impasto modelling paste, glue, white acrylic impasto paint 11th-17th December 2005 I wanted to do something more directly representational this time - impressions of an Australian landscape with mountains, lagoons and fence posts (the latter probably being the influence of Rolf Harris who would regularly include rows of fence posts in his big landscapes, to the point of them becoming one of his trademarks!) The main influence here though will be my own father Howard, who made something very similar indeed over 20 years ago with Plaster of Paris, again using folds of cloth and wood (toothpicks if I recall). I know he'll read this at some point so I just want to say - I love you Dad, hope you're well and thanks for the inspiration :-) Thank you all for taking a look and your thoughts are always appreciated too :-)

This more representational direction is a most exciting and unexpected development, Jim. Although I got the impression you were going to include colour in this, or was this another work? I guess you'll get around to trying this sometime. Again, the careful use of lighting realy makes this. Actually, I have tried painted relief work, so I can appreciate where you're coming from here! Sorry, my thoughts are bit unfocused tonight. Blame the single malt!

I've been getting curious about this one after reading your journal lately Jim & it's turned out really well, the lighting sets the relief off a treat & it has an amazing feeling of depth & atmosphere for a relief work, I think the white works well with this & find it hard to imagine with colour although I like the way some ambient light seems to have crept in with a touch of colour on the right there! Nice work, it's quite fascinating to watch you develop this technique, more to come I hope ; )

@Bev, the ambient light crept in well didn't it! I'll be uploading details in the next couple of days, the second of which shows a strong touch of that (I rested the canvas on one of the sofas which was draped in a rust-coloured blanket)

My first thought as this image unfolded was just what you intended. Beautifully created. And the lagoon...Wow! It does look like water. Incredible. But Jim, one of the things I like best is the loving tribute to you dad. That is the heart of this fabulous work. V
