Description

Lichens are great sensors to measure the quality of the air. The fresh air high in the mountains provides the perfect circumstances to grow albeit a very slow growth. The average age of lichens you see here can be easy 50 years. Lichens are a perfect example of harmonious cooperation: a lichen is a symbiosis between a fungus and an alga, in this case (probably) the maritime sunburst lichen (Xanthoria parietina). To my surprise there's only little online documentation available of these lichens in Europe, so I am not able to tell you much more. Nice pic Jan-Carel. Do the lichens prosper on one type of mineral in the rock? And what sun exposure angle do they prefer? Questions, questions. Still, it is a most interesting image -- Dick

Lichens are important to value the environement and the health of the air and the mountain, and they are so beautiful to see in your shot, with all these details and contrasts. Another superb natural fractal ! Have a good day my friend. Hugs.

This is cool. You go into detail about the little things that lots of us would over look. It's amazing to know it can take that long for them to grow. (This is like being back in science class for me... and I love science.)

I only know lichens from a science-fiction novel by John Wyndham entitled Trouble With Lichen. I loved that novel, and I love your photo. Excellent capture!

I guess I'm not the only one who takes pictures of lichens on rocks. :-) This reminds me of a photo of farm country from a very high altitude.

Not only beautiful but of great scientific interest as well is Xanthoria parietina. From biomonitoring of trace element contamination to outer space surviving conditions, are studied using this species as a biological model. Thanks for sharing!!!
