Description
This is a photo from a recent trip I took to New Mexico. Specifically, Carlsbad Caverns, in the southeastern area of the state is one of the largest underground cavern complexes in the world. This particular section, called the Hall of Giants, is only a small part of an area called the Big Room - so named because its size is equivalent to that of 6 football fields.
At the same time, this cavern complex is 750 feet below ground. It can be reached by an elevator, or a Natural Entrance, which consists of a zigzag trail winding down an entry hole that is roughly 40 degrees off horizontal.
For a sense of scale, look to the darker area to the lower right of the image. That railing marks the path around the Big Room, and is roughly hip high. The formation in the background is rougly 200 feet tall.
To the far right of the image, you will see a stalagmite and a stalactite which are on the verge of meeting and forming a column.
The lights in the cavern are not colored. The colors are created by the different mineral deposits making up the stalagmites and columns in the complex.
This place was amazing. I have many images to share, and hopefully you'll all find them as fascinating as I do.
Thanks for viewing!!
