Description
This is a Northrop XP56 "Black Bullet" experimental concept fighter from 1942. It was not a great success with just two prototypes flying. The first was written of in a landing accident after its second flight and the whole program was abandoned after the second had made ten flights as it was considered too dangerous to proceed. It looks great though! This is the first one, after the first flight. Thanks for looking, happy new year to everybody!

The Douglas "Mixmaster" made a successful efficient crossing of the continent with a similar pusher propellor concept though the counterroatating propellors of the A-2D were a disaster described to me by "Doc" Livingston it's test pilot. This Northrup may have preceded the Douglas one as Northrup was often the originator of Douglas best after working there.

I personally touched (by "touched" I mean lovingly fondled) the survivor while it was at Silver Hill. It's at Dules now. Nice rendition.

Great image! The Northrop planes were always on the cutting edge, as they really took designs to limit. Thanks!
