Description

Aside from the Poser 4 figures, this was entirely modelled and rendered in LightWave the grass created with Sasquatch/Lite. All textures were created in PSP 7.The name "Flying Circus" given by the Allies refered to German fighter squadrons as they adopted the habit of painting their aircraft in vibrant colours, usually a specific colour was most prevelent to mark each squadron.Aces (three confirmed kills) enjoyed special status and often further personalized their aircraft. The colours helped spotters on the ground confirm their pilots' kills. As well this helped pilots identify their own quickly. The Albatros dominated the air for a period of time. The focus of this image is the Albatros D V.It is a fairly accurate representation of this famous German aircraft from the First World War (1914-1918). The plane in the foreground is regarded as one of a number of aircraft that Manfred von Richthofen flew in his short but famous career. (He was better known as the *Red Baron*) P.S Richthofen was not the only pilot to paint his aircraft all red (notably his famous Fokker Triplane). There are claims that a few allied pilots adopted this colour too. Thanks for looking! :B eaver !

It goes with my favorite young boy phrase. "...across the meadow could be heard the sound of aero engines." There was a whole shelf of books about aerial combat in WW-I in the local library. It sat on the window ledge just behind the librarian. I read them one by one. Archie! Flaming onions! It was only later I learned of the obsolescence of the scissors and the ascendance of the chandelle and immelmann. Lightwave seems to have a personality. I like what it says of the artists who use it.

very photographic to look at, nice modeling, just the scale of the planes to the people behind looks way out, unless the ground crew were all 9 feet tall. Other than that a great image.

Your quite right ambientLight about the ground crew, they were 9 feet tall! smirk. In all the forced perspective involved with this image,I clearly lost perspective. Thanks for spotting the error,I will soon attempt to repost with fault corrected. :B eaver !

Okay, I've shrunk down ground crew a little bit. Regretabley only so far as Saquatch-Lite is limited and makes it difficult to graduate the length of grass over the size of my field without great pains.Thank you for all input! :B eaver !

Great picture. Excellent modeling and layout. About the only thing that keeps taking my attention away from the planes is the tents. They appear 3 sided and the ground on the other side of the tents looks odd. Perhaps the transparency should be changed but otherwise a great piece of work!

I have some good colour plans of how the Albatros were painted with there losange patens and some of the more out there designs etc. I build a model of an Albatros when I used to fly model planes many years ago, it had a 34in wingspan, I wonder where the photos of that are.

Wonderful creation. I love the way you recreate the planes, era, and prop wash. Tallpindo is right about how evocative this is of WWI books!
