Description

Kathy's P4Male Centaur with a modified texture on the human part. I'm 99% sure I used Sharkey's Fantasy Bow, but I've collected several bows so I might be mistaken. In any event, it was free stuff! Sometimes confused with the constellation Centaurus, this constellation is the Centaur Pholus (aks Crotus). Centaurus is the Centaur Chiron, but the story of why they are in the sky is the same: SAGITTARIUS IN GREEK MYTH (like most myths, there are variations to this story--here's one of them): Centaurs were half-man, half-horse creatures that were rude, untrustworthy, cheating, violent, deceptive and drank excessively. Chiron, was different. He was educated by the Sun-god Apollo, and by Diana, the Goddess of the Moon and Wild Animals. Chiron was kind, gentle, and wise and his many skills and great wisdom made him a favorite teacher of kings. Among his students were the mighty Hercules, the sailor Jason, and the warrior Achilles. As the story goes, Hercules had traveled far one day and was very thirsty. He asked his centaur friend Pholus, who himself was unique among Centaurs being as gentle and wise as Chiron, to open one of the jars of wine that belonged jointly to all the centaurs. Being a good host, Pholus did so. When the aroma of this fine wine flowed out over the countryside the other centaurs furiously galloped up to the house and demanded to know how he had dared open the wine without first consulting them. In the ensuing fight, Pholus fled and left the battle to Hercules. Hercules killed many of the Centaurs, driving the rest from the countryside, telling them never to return. Kind Chiron was nearby observing the terrible events, and poor Hercules failed to recognize his friend from a distance and shot him with one of his poisoned arrows. The immortal Chiron could not be killed, but would have suffered eternally. Seeing these events Zeus placed Chiron in the stars as Centaurus. Meanwhile, Pholus had been looking over the dead and dying Centaurs wondering how Hercules arrows could have been so fatal even when the wounds were light. He pulled an arrow from one of the bodies to examine it, but it slipped from his fingers and struck him in the knee. Unlike Chiron, Pholus was not immortal and the arrow killed him instantly. When Hercules discoverd this tragedy, he carried his friend to the foot of Mt. Pholoe to give him an honored burial. Zeus had also held Pholus in high regard and decided that Pholus should also rest in heaven placing him in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius. ++ According to another myth, Sagittarius is in the sky poised and ready to shooting an arrow through the heart of Scorpius if he ever tries to do any harm to anyone.
