Part 6 - The Rescue by luckyred

The following evening, Randoff sat crouched in the bushes giving his men time to position themselves across the clearing while he
waited. He was clad in a simple tunic and tights to make crawling through the brush easier and carried a short sword and dagger for protection.
This morning he had informed his men of the plan and avoided Michael's protesting glare when he also informed them that he himself would go in to attempt the rescue. Later, Michael had tried to argue the risk of him going in, but Randoff reminded him of his uncanny ability to go undetected and his friend eventually relented. As he crouched waiting for the skirmish to begin, Randoff noted the layout of the small encampment. He spied two Orcs off to one side bickering over what seemed to be a leg of lamb. Further away from the fire, he saw two more standing and talking with the Dragon Lord. Shifting his gaze to his side of the fire, he saw the girl chained to a tree and only one Orc in attendance. With any luck he would be the only one Randoff would have to content with. Suddenly there came a volley of shouts and arrows from within the woods across the clearing. The encampment quickly came to life. The two bickering Orcs dropped the meat and dove behind a sitting log they had drug to the clearing earlier. The two talking with the Dragon Lord fought over the scant cover of a tree near the spot they had been standing. The Dragon Lord barked an order at the Orc sitting near the captive, "Grot, guard the girl! It will be your folly if she escapes!" And with that he turned and strode toward the woods. Now was the moment for Randoff to act, if he took too long it would put his men into danger. He quickly drew his dagger and threw, hitting Grot in the throat. Luckily the girl did not cry out as he silently moved in and searched Grot's pockets for the key... Empty! Damn! His first mistake! He should have known that the Dragon Lord would trust no one besides himself to carry such a precious cargo.
"Not a sound," he whispered as the thrust the tip of the blade into the collar. The girl eyes grew large with fear but uttered not a squeak. Finally after what seemed to be a lifetime, the collar snapped open. His head jerked up. The collar had not been the only noise! Quickly, he shoved the girl toward the woods and whispered sharply, "RUN!" |

Oh, yeah, now that's a rescue! I thought Michael was going to do it, but it's interesting that it's Randoff. Great action here. What a super story and your images are a grand part of the experience. :o) CC

Oh boy, now here comes trouble! Not sure how many times a war has been started over a woman, but it certainly seems to be a historic past time! The orcs with their endless fumbling around aren't too much of a threat, but the Dragon Lord won't be too happy about this at all! Excellent work on this series, the images are as well realized as the words!
