Description

Aloha Every One.... Here is a shot showing my vantage points along this beach. As you can see it's a lava cliff worn down by the pounding surf. This whole beach is less than 1/8 of a mile long, the cliff heights vary from about 8-10' up to about 20'. On this day of shooting I walked this beach back and forth several times shooting different areas as I went along. As you can see, there is quite a slant to the beach as the waves go back and forth here causing a mean undertow. Swimming here is not advisable as there is a strong rip current just outside the breakers pulling away and too the right of the beach. As I mentioned before in my first post, this beach is newly created within the last 20 yrs. The original beach was located 1/4 mile in back of this beach. Lava over ran this entire area and swallowed up many houses and about a 1 1/2 mile stretch of beach. It use to be a great place to surf and swim before it was inundated with lava...now this is all that is left. Although the lava hasn't flowed here since then, the chance that it will someday cover this up again is still very high. Our volcano has not stopped pumping lava into the ocean for the last 20 yrs. About a month ago we lost about 40 acres in the newly formed areas when a huge bench of lava fell off into the ocean. This is a common occurrence when lava hits the sea and huge areas become unstable and just fall off....not a good time to be around when that happens. Thanks for having a peek at my little series, and tonight I will post a shot of this beautiful area at sunrise. This one was taken when the sun peeked through the dark clouds for less than a minute. Have a great weekend everyone! Aloha!

Yay! Thank you so much for sharing these stunning details, both captures and story! Wow! A place where land is formed and deformed, where the sea gives and takes place while the neverending waves constantly hit the coastline here! Excellent series, however ending, but I'm glad I see this posting knowing you're safe and sound posting them! These waves look soooo beautiful! Once again, thank you for sharing all these breath-taking details, Dave! :)

I had talked to a guy who did swim these newly formed beaches but on a calm day. Steep slope on the sand then a sudden drop to deepness. The currents were very strong. He did not recommend swimming in these newly formed beaches. Excellent and powerful shot.. Aloha

And now we get the long view. Perfect so with so many elements that work just right. For instance, the way the clouds seem to be the mirror of the coast...
