If you have tried to view cross-eye stereograms and failed, here's another method you might try. My wife who had been trying for years tried it and was able to see them within one minute! :-)
1. Get a piece of Black construction paper about 6" square. (Sorry, non-USA people, I gave up trying to learn metrics).
2. Cut a rectangle about 2" x 1 1/2" in the center.
3. Sit about 3' away from your screen.
4. Position the black paper about 10" away from your eyes.
5. Focus at the hole in the black paper.
This method will effectively remove the distracting side images. Experimentation involving measurments in all the above steps may be necessary, but you have the time and the desire, don't you?

I had a bunk bed when I was little and I slept on the bottom. I would lie there and look at the bed above me, where there was a grid pattern. Crossing my eyes (or defocusing) would make it seem closer (or further). So I got a lot of practice. This one is awesome.
